Today, @SenBlumenthal and I introduced the Save the Kurds Act.
I believe that there is strong bipartisan support for the idea of protecting the Kurds in Syria and beyond because they have been such a reliable ally to the United States. The SDF – with a large Kurdish element – took the brunt of the fight to defeat ISIS in President Trump’s first term.
I realize Syria is complicated culturally, ethnically and politically. However, attacking the Kurds greatly diminishes the United States’ standing and will hinder Syria’s ability to grow as a country.
To those countries or groups who believe it is open season on the Kurds in Syria without consequence, you will be sadly mistaken.

Our Kurdish allies in Syria have for years been among our most effective partners in combatting the Islamic State. The United States must continue to stand with our Kurdish partners as we pursue peace in the Middle East. https://t.co/l01OO99DVT
As previously stated, I am trying to work with the administration and regional partners to prevent a bloodbath in Syria against our Kurdish allies. It is now time for the region to change their ways and man up for decency.
To Saudi Arabia: I have tried to work hard to chart a new path for relations between your country, the United States and the region. I have tremendous respect for many of the changes that have been embraced. However, the Kingdom’s attack on the United Arab Emirates and their silence regarding the Syrian government’s constant assault on the Kurds has to change. Please understand that I am smart enough to know that Saudi Arabia has influence on the Syrian government, and I expect them to use it to keep the region from falling further into chaos.
To Saudi Arabia: Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Watching the deteriorating situation in Syria with great concern. The Kurds are under threat from the new Syrian government that is aligned with Turkey.
It would be a disaster for America’s reputation and national security interests to abandon the Kurds, who were the chief ally in destroying the ISIS caliphate.
Therefore, I will be introducing legislation this week designed to impose crippling sanctions on any government or group engaged in hostilities against the Kurds. The Save the Kurds Act, I believe, will receive strong bipartisan support and must have teeth to make it effective.
Stay tuned.
Let me be clear: the Syrian government should not misread U.S. sanctions relief.
Any threat to prisons that hold ISIS prisoners, the security of our vital Kurdish allies, or the safety of ethnic minorities violates the repeal of Caesar sanctions.
Damascus must halt its advances immediately — or risk new crushing sanctions.

There is strong and growing bipartisan interest in the U.S. Senate regarding the deteriorating situation in Syria. There is strong consensus that we must protect the Kurds who were there for us in destroying the ISIS caliphate, as well as many other groups.
The powers of the Senate are real. Stay tuned.
You cannot unite Syria by the use of military force as Syrian government leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa is trying to do.
This move by Syrian government forces against SDF members is fraught with peril. I would expect Congress would want to have hearings and briefings ASAP. I believe this would be appropriate.
Finally, it was the SDF forces that were the boots on the ground when President Trump destroyed ISIS in his first term. I believe we owe them better.
If Syrian government forces continue to advance in the north toward Raqqa, I will push for reimposing Caesar Act sanctions on steroids.
Apparently no one in Syria is listening to me or other U.S. government officials. If this continues, not only will there be bone-crushing sanctions, it will permanently damage relationships between the U.S. and the new Syrian government. If you think we’re BSing - keep it up.
I’ve tried to be fair to the new government, but apparently it’s falling on deaf ears. If you want a conflict with the U.S. Senate and to do permanent damage to the U.S.-Syria relationship - keep going. If you want to salvage the relationship, stop and turnaround.
I hope you choose wisely.
