Silver's Shining Moment is Coming, and the Solar Energy Sector is a Major Contributor
Another Year, Another Supply Shortage
In 2023, worldwide industrial demand for silver reached an all-time high of 654.4 million ounces, surpassing supply for the third consecutive year. The supply deficit of 184.3 million ounces last year offsets the surpluses of the previous decade, according to the Silver Institute. This trend is expected to continue with another record level of industrial demand anticipated this year, setting the stage for a potential supply squeeze and price increase.
♻️Changing Demand Dynamics for Solar Panel Technology
The surge in demand is driven by the Green Economy, particularly the increased use of silver in solar panel manufacturing. Silver, the best conductor of electricity at room temperature, is crucial for green technology. Although only a small amount of silver (approximately 0.643 ounces) is used per panel, the rapid adoption of solar power resulted in 100 million ounces of demand from the solar industry last year – around 14% of total silver demand.
Interestingly, more silver is being used per unit as substitute metals have proven less reliable and have shorter lifespans. Advances in technology have led to more efficient panels using 20%–120% more silver. Analysts predict that by 2027, manufacturers will need over 20% of the current annual silver supply for solar panels.
♻️A Recipe for Upside Potential?
Silver, often more volatile than gold, moves directionally with gold but tends to experience larger percentage changes. Current silver stock for manufacturing is expected to deplete, creating a compelling picture for silver investors. With increasing industrial demand, a supply deficit, and an uncertain macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape, the future looks bright for silver investors.

Expectations of a wider silver-supply deficit in 2024, following three consecutive years of shortfalls, are fueling optimism.
Silver market deficits over the past three years have more than offset previous surpluses, likely giving it room to rise further.
Silver will outperform gold significantly in the coming year after decades of underperformance.
