To every junior doctor reading this:
Your life is worth more than the "good doctor" "dedicated" tags. Your health and sanity is worth more than mere validation. Speak up. Rest without guilt. We see you. We stand with you. ✊🏾 A "good doctor" is a sustainable doctor.
Marlon Brando once told Dick Cavett that everyone on Earth is an actor.
Then he proved it, live on air, by dissecting Cavett himself.
It remains one of the most disarming exchanges in talk show history.
Cavett opened by pressing Brando on something he had read for years: that Brando considered acting "not a fit profession for a man." Brando deflected at first. "We can't believe the press; I don't know what we can believe in this country."
But then, in his words, "in an effort to help your ratings," Brando laid out his real view of acting:
"I think that we couldn't survive a second if we weren't able to act; acting is a survival mechanism, a social lubricant, and we act to save our lives every day."
People lie constantly, he explained. By not saying what they think. By showing something they don't feel. By trying to give the appearance of feeling something they don't actually feel.
Cavett pushed back: "But that's not acting."
Brando disagreed:
"That is acting. When you're nervous or frightened in this chair, or distressed and angry, you know that is not what is necessary to be shown here, so you control your face. You're a highly controlled person and you have to do that."
Cavett argued there had to be gradations. He was motivated in the moment, but he couldn't wake up the next morning and repeat that same performance on command, take after take. Surely that skill, the thing Brando did better than almost anybody, was something different.
Brando refused the compliment. He pointed to the office worker who hates his boss but performs enthusiasm for his "impossible notions" day after day to keep his job.
Cavett countered that delivering the same line six times, getting "something deeper into it time after time," takes an actor. Everyday performances are one-time things with immediate motivation.
"No, they're not one-time things because it's a daily procedure," Brando replied. "The dialogue changes but the motivation doesn't."
Then came the moment the interview is remembered for. Brando turned the lens directly on his host:
"Right now, you're thinking of 60 things at once: 'Is it getting dull? Is he upset? Is he bored? Is he offended? Here's a good time for a joke.' You're doing this editing at an insane rate with a demeanor of levity and zest, and that finally isn't what goes on in your mind or feelings at all."
Cavett's response said everything:
"I just feel like all my clothes have been taken off."
Brando softened it. "I couldn't do what you do, and that's a different kind of acting; you're playing a different kind of role."
Cavett tried one final test. He handed Brando a commercial script and challenged him to read it, any way he wanted. Brando refused flatly: "No, I won't do it."
Cavett's closing line: "I'm glad you didn't. The man's incorruptible, and that's what I hoped."

God honors his favorites by crushing them, drops the whole insufferable wretched weight of purpose on their spines until they either snap into shape or snap entirely. the unburdened, those buoyant grinning vapid little phantoms drifting through their own lives without a single crushing thing to carry, they are forgotten
If your Instagram is public, Meta just enrolled you in something you didn't agree to.
Their new AI tool, Muse Image, lets anyone @-mention your Instagram handle in Meta AI and generate images using your face and photos. launched Tuesday. opt-in by default. no notification when it happens.
→ you won't be told when someone creates an AI image of you
→ opting out only stops future generation; anything already made stays live
→ there's no mechanism to remove images created before you opted out
how to turn it off:
Instagram → Profile → Menu (☰) → Sharing and Reuse → turn off Posts and Reels under "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta"
note: the setting is still rolling out. if you don't see it yet, keep checking.
if you want the strongest protection right now: go private.
Brave New World had the potential to recreate this scene or give us a fraction of it. But instead, they acted like Bruce Banner doesn't exist in the MCU
The concept of a phone book sounds unbelievable when you really think about it. A huge book containing people’s full names, phone numbers, and home addresses was printed and distributed freely to everyone.
Looking back, it was almost like a built-in motivation to behave yourself… because anyone who had a problem with you could literally find where you lived. 😅
The craziest thing about “Skyfall” is that Adele didn’t just make a great Bond song. She made a song that sounds like it had been part of the Bond franchise for decades. Instant classic from the moment it dropped.
Thanks for your critique, Janet. We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only 6 minutes long. NBC weren’t happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn’t happy.
One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what??
The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn’t meant for you.
Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!
Except maybe the love of God, you’re not automatically deserving of much in life. Most things worth having have to be earned or worked toward in some way. Want a good career? Work for it. Want a good partner? Work on becoming a good partner yourself. Something has to give.
“Jester for a woman” is very interesting wording. They really want you to be a fool for them. Starting to realize when they say 30+ men are strict, it’s just because they won’t tolerate the annoying girlfriend gimmick.
When China suffered great famine in the end of 1950s. US denied China from buying grains. It even spreaded the words that Mao allowed it to happen and tens of millions of Chinese died. Chinese people couldn't do anything but endure. They learned that they can only rely on themselves.
Fast forward to today, now US-led World Bank is accusing China for hoarding food and fertiliser.
The irony.
please, don’t take this advice. no matter what ever you do. don’t take this advice. a key part of compatibility is how you two handle tough and vulnerable moments. more often than not, what women see, we don’t as men.
this is bad advice. horrible.
STUDY HARD. No matter if it seems impossible. No matter if it takes time. Wake up early and start studying for your future. Just remember that the feeling of success is the best feeling in the world.
