A7: I use to believe that I had little control over difficult decisions or tiring tasks. Now I believe that by tackling those tasks during peak times, can change my outlook and productivity. Timing is a tool that can be used to make things manageable and positive #whendecisions
A6: One way to sync a grade level (tribe) is to work as a team on a specific focus. Plan, teach, possibly observe one another and debrief. Through these valuable shared experiences I have grown as an educator and strengthened the sense of belonging to my team. #whendecisions
It is so easy to focus on teacher led/created rituals. I love this idea of letting the students show us what is important to them and honoring their contributions to our community. #whendecisions
A5: Perhaps if we pay attention to the smaller endings (last week of a unit, last few weeks of a grading period) we can use them to motivate ourselves and students instead of rushing to finish. #whendecisions
Our class does this with writing. Each student has individual goal they choose on a stickie note. We revisit it once a week and check to see if their work is reflecting their goal. Simple goals like: I am adding spaces, using word wall etc
A great way to close the day. We have a very quick closing meeting. I will try having students share one thing they are thankful for, or something that went well. Ending with gratitude is important
A4: Providing students with a reminder that we are midway through our work session may be trigger to focus on task completion. It’s also good in the case when groups have worked on establishing roles and need to be a bit more productive toward the end product. #whendecisions
A4: Checking in with colleagues in my grade level and the one above can trigger my midpoint alarms. It’s a great way to keep me on track, get ideas, and inspiration for the rest of the year. #whendecisions
A3: The "what" can be so overwhelming that we fail to start or zip through in a careless rush. If we paid equal attention the "when", it would make the "what" manageable and produce better outcomes. Get rid of the To Do list and make a When list. #whendecisions
A2: Would our district consider late starts so meetings can take place in a.m.? I like that the presentations and info for our current meetings are emailed to us ahead of time. I will now review that info at an optimal time and avoid the trough. #whendecisions
@ConnellySue I embed them into our ELA/ Writing time. We usually do the hands on Sci. experiments and SS craft/projects at end of day but keep the reading/ written portion earlier.
Would be interested to see how a rotating schedule of core subjects: Math, Writing, ELA might be effected by peak/trough timing.
Day 1: Math in a.m., Writing mid a.m., ELA -noon
Day 2: ELA- a.m., Math- mid, Write- noon
Day 3: Write- am, ELA mid, Math- noon #whendecisions
A1: I would write the email asap to keep details fresh, but wait until a peak or recovery time to review and send to make sure it is a well thought out message. If I write the message during a trough time my mood/tiredness will likely come forth in my words. #whendecisions
Just finished my takeaway on Flipgrid. Thank you Paula for putting this book study together. I have learned so much and I'm eager to get into the classroom and start empowering students. I've also loved learning the new apps we used for responding to questions. #sau41empowered
@paula_izbicki @DanielPink Brain breaks and movement breaks are so important. Even 3-5 min during a lesson helps get the wiggles out and focus attention
