Then his heart stopped again.

We were in bed. I was the only one there.

WHAT THE POLICE MUST DO NOW:

Yesterday the Nigerian Police @PoliceNG promised a “diligent investigation” into the death of Mohbad. We thank you @PoliceNG and we hope it is not another performative lie for social media applause.

However IF the @PoliceNG is serious, this is what it needs to do now as a matter of critical urgency and immediate emergency.

The Police needs to get a court order to immediately exhume the corpse of Mohbad from the shallow dirty grave he was hurriedly buried to arrange an immediate comprehensive medical autopsy to determine objectively and medically the accurate cause of death.

The decision for an autopsy is now for the state. Because this is now a legal and criminal matter.

Let’s be clear on something:
Anyone who dies within 24hours of a hospital admission, or anyone who dies a sudden, unexpected death in a suspicious manner should mandatorily undergo a medical autopsy and depending on autopsy findings, may also have a police investigation as there could have been a criminal offence committed.

The only reason this does not happen frequently is because Nigeria is lawless, and in many cases, health professionals are not willing to be at loggerheads with the family of a dead patient, and also autopsy costs are demanded from the grieving family. But this is very wrong.

The autopsy decision and costs is for the state. It is NOT for family to decide or to pay for the autopsy- though it is always advisable to carry the family along and seek their consent.

However in weird situations where someone dies a sudden unexplained death in clearly suspicious circumstances within 24hours in a hospital, yet the family refuses to consent to an autopsy;

the state/govt can override their wishes and carry out the autopsy in the interest of public good- because that person could have been murdered, or poisoned, or they could have died of a rare illness that can spread/kill more people. It is for these reasons (to rule out a crime like murder and ensure it’s not a rare infectious spreadable illness) that the state has the powers to order an autopsy and carry it out.

This is the law.
This is basic training and teaching that you are given in medical school. All doctors trained in nigeria know this. The Nigerian police @PoliceNG should know this. And this law applies in Lagos state.

The suspicious sudden manner in which Mohbad died, the conflicting reports of what exactly killed him, the hurriedness of his burial, the twisting of his neck to fit a wrong coffin, the hastiness of his family to point fingers at the wife, the reported blatant refusal of his family to consent to autopsy…all of these means there’s a whole lot in this young man’s death that calls for clarity, and it may also point to someone/some people being quite eager to cover up something - which may point to this young man being murdered.

Anyway the point of this post is to simply say the @PoliceNG needs to act fast and act now. They need to approach a judge, get a court order authorising an autopsy be carried out on the grounds that this young man died in a suspicious sudden unexplained manner within 24hours of a hospital admission. These are legal grounds for a state-authorised autopsy.

This should be done fast.
And once a judge gives an order, Mohbad’s body should be exhumed and an autopsy performed under the strict orders of the state. And if anyone tries to interfere, they can be arrested by the police as obstructing the course of justice.

I know everything I’ve written here may sound quite idealistic and not achievable- but I promise you that if the @PoliceNG is serious and if we the public (and the state) decides to stand by Mohbad; his wife/family will get the justice, the clarity, the closure and all the answers they needs from an urgent comprehensive medical autopsy.

As I have already said;
Without an autopsy, there will be no peace, no clarity, no closure.
