Today, we visited Imvepi Refugee Settlement in Terego District to assess the extent of damage and destruction caused to the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) facilities following violent conduct by some refugees on the 25th of last month. The incident stemmed from a disagreement over the election of settlement leaders.

This is a regrettable incident that resulted in the tragic loss of two refugees' lives, and it must never happen again.

During our meeting, I was informed that 33 of the 37 suspects arrested in connection with the election-related violence have had their case files processed and are ready for prosecution in court.

We also discussed key challenges, including inadequate resources for both refugees and host communities, as well as a police presence that is disproportionately low for a settlement housing over 85,000 refugees.

We must applaud President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for welcoming refugees to Uganda, as well as the Uganda Police Force for taking swift action to restore security following the incident.

On behalf of the government, I will request the UNHCR to support the rehabilitation of the damaged facilities.

Going forward, the government and development partners will collaborate to sensitize refugees and host communities on self-reliance, productivity, leadership, and adherence to the laws of the country.

Permanent Secretary Mr. @AlexKakooza_ , Ag. Commissioner for Refugees Mr. Tony Ameny, and other key stakeholders attended the meeting.
