Shame on you #TSA Austin. Did not want to allow me to take my breast milk #EmilyCalandrelli I had 180 oz deemed too much Agents made me take out all luggage and swabbed every single item packed and worn. Checked every milk bag. In tears and shaking #disgraceful
Today I learned that an anesthesiologist makes a few hundred dollars more placing an epidural than my attending makes for 9 months of prenatal care, labor, delivery, and the postpartum visit. And well that's abysmal and quite frankly BS
I would just like to give a thank you to the residents who show grace to brand new attendings. 🙏🏻 We are learning and evolving too! And I hope there is just as much learning in talking through our surgical growth and thought process as there is from watching a seasoned master.
Dentist friends : please stop making pregnant women get some kind of “medical clearance” form signed by us prior to their dental procedures.
Poor dental health & infections increase risk for preterm labor & other complications.
It just delays necessary care.
Thanks you @BrighamWomens for highlighting our work to address lower pay in gyn surg and the poor downstream effects. So grateful for the support. https://t.co/FSHF0Nr86b
Being off work post-call after working 24 hours is NOT a “day off.” Physicians, stop using this language - it’s not normal & contributes to normalizing burnout.
When other specialities downgrade Gynecologic surgeons, it downgrades the entire female experience—women are receiving our surgeries in enormous numbers, and a “no-big-deal” surgeon makes everyone think women get “no-big-deal” surgeries. And that is wrong.
Be like this! 👇🏻
Yes. There is a definite difference between "regular voice" and "surgeon voice". It's exhausting to repeat yourself multiple times to accomplish one small task. 😩😫
Today in the OR just before the timeout, the circulating nurse paged overhead for “Dr. Merrill to come to the OR for the timeout”...I had been there for 10 minutes helping her with the patient and we had worked together before 🤦🏻♀️
In America, it takes a minimum of 11 YEARS to create a board-certified physician. 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school, and 3+ years of residency. Mistreating them into early retirement or killing them off in a pandemic is an 11-year fix, minimum. Tread carefully.
Although most obgyns are women, we have one of the largest #genderwagegaps. As a group our compensation is now one of the lowest paid specialties (although #gynecologyissurgery). This reflects how we value #womenswork. 🙄

Today I learned than many physicians are graduating with upwards of $400k in student loan debt and some only earning $120k a year after residency.
This is absolutely heartbreaking.
Our doctors deserve better.
Our patients deserve physicians not burdened by crippling debt.
