The Superstars one is more mechanically interesting. The fan in FBZ is there just to push you upwards instead of jumping. Superstars punishes you if you just walk into it mindlessly, and you can jump out of it which could make for interesting shortcuts
superstars is plagued by poor execution of many of its new stuff (multiplayer, emerald powers, for some reason sonic 4 boss design) but if you open the game for time attack and focus on the core gameplay, its still some great stuff all around. all the talk got me playing today
And when I played it.. I was really disappointed. Kirby didn't have outfits for his copy abilities, the level design felt weaker, moves weren't as robust, and I didn't like the artstyle as much. So I dropped the game. I do plan on revisiting it some day.-
What made me able to enjoy Superstars was that I was going into the game wanting to play more classic Sonic stages rather than expecting a great game. And that's what I got, great levels that are really fun to time attack
I 100% get why people don't like this game.-
Honestly I don't think lives in video games are a bad thing. I think they're great.
I do think that one of the details that made lives meaningful was how they contributed to score in the arcade days.
Excess lives stopped adding to score, they lost a lot of design value imo
