Gender-responsive budgets are crucial in ensuring that women are not left behind. It is evident that there is a need for well-thought out mechanisms, throughout the budget cycle, that ensure women’s voices are reflected in the country’s fiscal affairs.
Grateful to @NIMDKenya for making this convening possible under the #PowerOfDialogueKE programme.

The discussions brought to fore the barriers that still impede the participation of women in budget processes and the resultant effect on budget decisions.
While the #PFM Act of 2012 enshrines gender equity and public participation in governance, women remain underrepresented in public finance processes.
The barriers that the women in attendance highlighted include:
✅ Low representation in legislative bodies and Public Finance-Related Committees. As it stands, the National Assembly Finance and National Planning Committee has only two women out of a membership of 15.
✅ Capacity gaps that impede their meaningful engagement with technical budget documents.
✅ A flawed and tokenistic approach to public participation that locks out minorities and doesn’t give citizens ample time to engage with policy documents.
