The bystander who stepped in to stop a gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has come forward and identified himself as Kaylub Giamanco, a lifelong Bend resident who has two daughters at the school.

Police say he pursued and fatally shot the 16-year-old attacker, ending a rampage that took the lives of three children and a teacher and wounded two others.

A statement released by Giamanco's family on Friday said, "He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support."

"The tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary has devastated the Bend community," they wrote. Giamanco and his family asked for privacy and said they will not be giving interviews.

As a 99 year old combat veteran of World War II, the father of six, and grandfather to four, I couldn’t be more grateful to Steve Kerr, a man who expressed everything I’ve been feeling since the horror of yesterday’s killings. Please watch.

Sad to hear about the passing of Dan Reeves. Amazing career in professional football. So glad to have gotten to know him here in Atlanta and so grateful for how nice he always was to my boys when we would see him on Saturday mornings getting bagels. RIP

[Aaron McLaughlin @11_apm]

our team has been away from family and friends for a month prepping for this. We have been here for 5 days practicing, were in a hotel for christmas just for it to be canceled 5 hours before kickoff? We deserve better

It’s only fitting that we start the parade here.

Definition of courage and bravery! Some heroes don’t wear capes! The media @Todayshow need to go after Dept of Justice and demand answers, why weren’t they there, what do they plan to do!

Dearest Mother —
On our way back home we were ambushed by a group of rouge Nationalists. A hard fought battle saw us reign victorious thanks to my air raid and help from an old friend Lt. Sandoval. We are set to arrive in Atlanta by dawn tomorrow. Your loving son.
