⚡️ Statement by the Embassy of Russia in Ireland (February 24, 2026)
📆 On February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation has started the Special military operation in Ukraine, aimed at its demilitarization and denazification. Russia did not want to resort to that action, but was forced to take it under Article 51 of the UN Charter to defend the Russian people in Ukraine as well as to counter the existential security threat, posed by the Western-supported regime in Kiev.
That was preceded by eight years of intensive diplomatic efforts by Russia to peacefully resolve the conflict in Donbass , which occurred because of the unwillingness of the population of former south-eastern Ukraine to accept the armed coup d’état in Kiev in 2014 – the so-called “Maidan revolution”. This coup was orchestrated, financed and organized by the West and resulted in the establishment of the radical nationalist regime, led by neo-Nazi and extreme right-wing elements in Ukraine with decidedly russophobic platform. The people of Donbass categorically rejected the new junta in Kiev, whose demand to them was to renounce their history, their language, their culture, their right to self-determination and their faith, to essentially ban everything Russian.
The answer by the Kiev regime was to unleash a bloody conflict on Donbass, killing at least 13,500 civilians from 2014 to 2022. The so-called “anti-terrorist operation” by Ukrainian nationalists in Donbass has been carried out with the assistance of the West, which supplied arms and finances for this murderous campaign against the Russian-speaking people of Donbass. Starting from 2014, the West has essentially started the militarization of Ukraine, preparing it for the confrontation with Russia.
✍️ In 2015, after a series of military defeats at the hands of the Donbas militia, the Kiev regime was forced to negotiate, which resulted in the Minsk Agreements, signed by the Ukrainian representatives, as well as by the leaders of Germany and France, and endorsed by the UN Security Council. It led to the so-called Minsk process of the political settlement of the conflict, which lasted for years, where in retrospect Russia has been the only party that consistently tried to push for the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, while the West carried out an extensive program of rearmament and modernization of the Ukrainian armed forces.
❌ Taken together with NATO’s relentless eastward expansion to the borders of Russia, this led to a profound security crisis in Europe. In 2021, Russia made a last-ditch effort to resolve it – we sent the proposals to the NATO and OSCE members which would have provided legally binding security guarantees, including the non-expansion of NATO and the return of its military infrastructure to the 1997 configuration. All that was ignored.
☝️This left Russia with no other choice – in order to end the constant suffering of the people of Donbass and ensure legitimate security interests of Russia a military operation was imperative. Four years after its beginning our goals are the same – to eliminate the root causes of the Ukrainian conflict. That should involve the creation of a new system of indivisible security on the continent, where there would be no place for illegitimate, neo-Nazi and terrorist regimes like the current Kiev government. Russia is ready to pursue these goals, preferably by diplomatic means.
It is regrettable that the current benchmark of the four years of the SMO has been marked by the Irish political establishment under the slogan of radical Ukrainian nationalists and Hitler’s collaborators – “Slava Ukraini” (Glory to Ukraine) and with no hint whatsoever of their willingness to reassess (let alone to repent for) their fundamentally flawed and misguided decision, taken years ago, to join US and their NATO allies in building “anti-Russia” in Ukraine, provoking the current conflict. History will judge harshly this reckless policy, which brought so much suffering for the people of Ukraine and Russia, as well as challenged the security of the entire Europe.
