No. This bill corrects a specific injustice that literally robbed certain public servants of our EARNED Social Security benefits - not just teachers, also police, firefighters, postal workers and others.
Workers whose career jobs are not covered under SS, but instead by a different state retirement system which we pay into instead have never receive SS benefits for THAT JOB. However, most of us also had other earnings throughout our lives (before, after and concurrent with the job for which we earned a state pension), and were required to fully pay into SS for that income. Reagan caused a law to be passed in 1983 (yes, to get revenge on teachers), that penalized anyone who also receives an unrelated state pension. NOTE: not for anyone else who has a pension, like corporate employees- just public servants. It cut our EARNED SS benefits in roughly in half. This was the federal government literally stealing what we earned. In my case, as I am just filing for SS now, my earned benefit is just under $1400/month--calculated based ONLY on the income on which I paid SS taxes. I was to receive only $686, after that atrocious law was applied to my case, because I also earned a teacher's pension. Now I, and millions of others, will receive the benefits we earned.
