@eurofounder So you stiff your waiter in the US as a correction to our system? Glad you’re here in the US to enlighten with your ways. I’ll make sure I tip extra next time to make up the difference.
@zenahitz Reconciling one’s inner world to the outer world and improving judgement about both worlds is the essence of the human condition. I’m not sure that education is domain specific in that regard.
@bryan_johnson I respect you both and see the value in what you do. Bryan is pushing back on the under optimism of health by general public by over optimizing. For those inclined to over optimize, heed Taleb’s warning. If you enjoy over optimizing, it’s better than nihilism.
@japan_nobunaga Isn’t pluralism an American value? To the extent Muslims can accept American pluralism, we should accept them. We should show them the benefits of pluralism can be compatible with their own faith. Those are American values. Respect for the constitution is an American value.
@jennfrey studying languages is best taught by fluent speakers. Much of US foreign language education is taught by non-fluent US degree holders. Strong language programs understand this. That is one of the reasons for lack of interest.
@jennfrey Where does the claim that no one wants to study languages anymore come from? My kids are fully bilingual and attend a language focused school with a waiting list.
@jennfrey@Scholars_Stage I see little value in majoring in foreign languages at a US university. My kids are fully bi-lingual and if they wanted a degree in French, I’d send them to France.
@jennfrey I have no political dog in this fight other than being a modern human living in the modern world. Could there be some value in knowing about the modern world to live a good life in it? Or is all the best knowledge already discovered? How do we know?
@zenahitz Agree - On what basis is it self evident that there are too many administrators? Headcount alone seems to be a poor indicator of any inherent value tradeoffs.
@nntaleb Epistemic humility is a virtue. You enforce that using a norm that many fail to understand and find distasteful. I can get over my distaste to see the value in what you say.
@ChamberofFit That’s a long list! For those intimidated, start small and add to it. Success compounds success. You don’t need 100% today - just enough to get you going and keep going tomorrow.
Models are currently trained on reality using outputs from human’s who interact with reality. In future recursive model, humans are removed. Isn’t this a giant echo chamber? https://t.co/s3pXC0sXhG
@nntaleb I like both. Physical books great for easy reference when around. Downsides when book lent out / misplaced. Electronic good for easy reference. Like everything else - tradeoffs. Sources no biggie - natural Lindy effect of best ideas with proper metaphysical grounding.
