What if fighting food waste, empowering women, and cutting carbon emissions could happen—all at once?

In the bustling markets of Rourkela, Odisha, a quiet revolution is unfolding. Five solar-powered cold storage units—strategically placed where farmers and vendors need them most—are helping reduce food spoilage by 31%.

But this is more than just a tech intervention. It’s a people-powered model that integrates clean energy, smart logistics, and grassroots entrepreneurship.

Electric rickshaws deliver fresh produce to homes. Women-led cooperatives run the cold rooms. And local farmers are finally getting fair prices for their harvest.

Incomes are rising. Food is lasting longer. And most importantly, over 90% of participating women say they now have a stronger voice in financial decisions at home.

The Cold Room Project by Rourkela Municipal Corporation is a shining example of how green energy can be inclusive, local, and deeply transformative.
