In less than seven months this year, 221,000 people have joined the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces. During the same period, Russian casualties have amounted to nearly 225,500, among them 131,000 killed and almost 93,000 wounded. A significant share of those wounds are severe, as frontline medical care in Russia is catastrophically poor.

Putin is preparing to simply send more Russians to war. He disguises it with different words and signals, but that is what he is preparing to do. It is crucial that, together with our partners, we exert enough pressure on Russia so that the idea of ending this aggression becomes the dominant one – the idea of peace, not of another Russian mobilization.

The photo shows seven scouts. It was the morning after we broke out of the encirclement. The order was simple: hold our positions until the battalion had withdrawn. We knew this was most likely a one-way ticket.

As we sat in the dugout, waiting for the end, a silence reigned that weighed heavily on our chests. We understood that this was the end, because the longer we held out, the tighter the encirclement would close in, but we remained silent. I still remember that look in my comrade’s eyes. It held the realization that it was the end. It was as if he were saying, “It’s all over, but we’re here, side by side.” It was the look of people who had fought for one another and were ready to face death together.

The line between life and death became as thin as paper. It seemed as if the whole world had fallen silent, as if the war itself had paused to let me be with my thoughts. The warmest moments flashed before my eyes. I thought of my sister, my aunt, my uncle, my wife, my child... I thought, “There’s so much I didn’t get to tell them, so much I haven’t done yet.” And then the most terrifying realization hit me—the world existed without me and would calmly continue to exist without me.

That thought was terrifying, but at the same time, there was a strange, bittersweet freedom in it—the freedom of an absolute limit, when you inwardly accept your own end.
That night we made it out. All seven of us, without a single casualty. But that feeling still haunts me—the feeling that it’s already over, the feeling of the final battle. We came out of there alive, but that experience forever changed the way I view life. Part of my mind, I suppose, is still trying to grasp the fact that after the inevitable “end” for us,
tomorrow has come after all… tomorrow, when we’ll be fighting,
dying, and will no longer see the dawn together…In a couple of days,
“The Artist” will die, and then, with this group gone, I’ll be left alone in the unit.

Russia is massively bringing its citizens into the temporarily occupied territories, destroying the economy, and altering an entire generation of children.

The number of Ukrainians in the occupied territories is declining, according to a report by the Eastern Human Rights Group and the Institute for Strategic Studies and Security. The indigenous population in the occupied areas has decreased by at least 60%, though the actual numbers may be even higher.

"Russia is waging not only a military war in the occupied territories, but a demographic one as well. The mortality rate in the occupied areas exceeds the birth rate by five to six times. Russia's strategy was never to make the Donbas prosperous. Their primary goal is to displace the local population and create conditions where people who lived there prior to 2014 ultimately say, 'It is simply impossible to live here,'" says Maksym Butchenko, Deputy Director of the Pavlo Lisianskyi Institute for Strategic Studies and Security.

Key findings:
▪️The East is losing its working-age population due to the destruction of the coal industry, forced mobilization, and the mass exodus of men.
▪️Ukrainians are being displaced while Russians are being brought in. In Melitopol, at least 60% of the population—and possibly more by now—are newcomers. The same is happening in Mariupol. The indigenous population is being erased and replaced by Russians to build a buffer zone and further push Ukrainians out. Meanwhile, mobilization continues. Ultimately, this is intended to make people completely forget what Ukraine is.
▪️Brainwashing children: аround 43,000 Ukrainian children are involved in various Russian militarized organizations, including "Yunarmiya" and "Dvizheniye Pervykh" (Movement of the First), while military propaganda is actively introduced even in kindergartens.

"The goal of our reports is to show European and American politicians, as well as the international community, what is truly happening there. Many still think that Russia arrived and everything is more or less fine. In reality, the scale of the socio-demographic catastrophe is so vast that even I was shocked," Butchenko says.
