Botswana did everything right: they put their diamond money in a sovereign wealth fund, funded education, successfully fought corruption, and tried to diversify their economy. And it hardly made a difference. Growth still reversed when the diamond market went bust. The education spending produced hardly any improvement in student performance. Turns out “good institutions” are not, in fact, the secret sauce, at least not on their own. This is not at all surprising if you have the right priors, but it’s very interesting to see it documented and quantified. Great article

GOVERNMENT vs THE STATE - a simplified explanation

I was once an Employment Equity Manager in my previous life. We had this very funny, bubbly short man called uBhut' Sipho Masondo, uNyambose, who ran workshops for our employees. 😅

He used to make practical examples when he spoke about concepts.

When explaining the difference between the Government and the State, he would say, the Government are the people we elect to manage the affairs of the State, on our behalf, for a specific period, then we remove them and bring others the next round.

The State, is all of us. We, the People, the citizens are The STATE. That is why you hear in court, it is said, the State against the accused, not the Government. The State vs so and so...

When someone hits a person with a car, the people who saw that accident, become STATE WITNESSES, in other words, the driver killed one of us, and those who were there, witnessed on our behalf, and will represent us when we THE STATE charges the accused.

I believe this is the mentality we must have at all times. That everyone in Government, works for us, they are not doing us a favor, We, The People, are THE STATE. They better not get that twisted. Then of course we can talk about separation between Civil Servants and Politicians we elect. A subject for another post. But "SERVANTS" says it all akere. They are employed to serve US!!!🤷🏽‍♀️
