I thought I would start the new year with a Serval Tracker status thread.
Some juicy highlights:
Tech stack: Django, Timescale, and Docker.
It costs about R800 a month to run the service.
3000 daily users, with 30 000 users on Black Friday.
it’s an economic drag on south africa. it’s an “import” because their earnings will eventually be exchanged for forex.
then they are also taking up resources (housing, potential skills, etc…)
finally, it’s exceedingly unlikely they are paying taxes on income earned.
economic migration isn’t some magical win
if people are moving to south africa because they want to create a life here and contribute to this society — then that’s one thing
but if people are moving here just to make some money only to go back home, then that’s a largely a loss

it got so exaggerated that they started asking well, if i were to be a writer — what would i write (to which i answered: a cross section between sci-fi, philosophy, and cosmic horror).
@zoomer_cape no amount of explanation will help someone through that though — the only way they will get through it is by pushing through the fear. unless someone is really open minded, the only way you can help them is by letting them just keep trying their bullshit way.
