“Life be Lifin’”
The older I get, the more I realize how much life resembles football.
When I played at Nebraska, I was blessed to learn from some incredible coaches. We had one of the greatest head coaches ever in Tom Osborne, and I was fortunate to have Frank Solich coaching the running backs. These men taught us how to prepare, how to be disciplined, how to be accountable, and how to keep moving when things didn’t go according to plan.
At the time, I thought they were teaching me football.
Today, I understand they were teaching me about life.
I can say the same thing about my dad. There were lessons he gave me growing up that I didn’t understand. Some I definitely didn’t like. 😂 There were times I wondered why he was so hard on me.
But I understand more of it now.
He was preparing me.
Because life be lifin’.
People we love leave us. Plans change. Careers take unexpected turns. Our bodies get hurt. Relationships change. Doors close. New ones open. Sometimes several things hit you at once, and nobody calls timeout so you can get yourself together.
Football taught me something about those moments.
Once that ball is snapped, it doesn’t matter how much you’re hurting. It doesn’t matter what happened on the last play. It doesn’t matter what you’re worried about after the game.
You take care of what’s in front of you.
Your assignment. Your responsibility. Your next decision.
And then you line up and do it again.
At this stage of my life, I’m grateful for the coaches, teammates, family, experiences and especially my dad that helped prepare me for plays I couldn’t possibly see coming.
I haven’t handled every play perfectly. None of us do.
But I’m still in the game. Still learning. Still growing. Still choosing.
So whatever life has put in front of me today, that’s where my attention belongs.
Take care of what’s in front of you. Then get ready for the next snap.
Because life is going to keep happening.
Life be Lifin’.

“If I want to play more, than I need to work harder. Everyone is not entitled to an opportunity to play. That’s not the way of the world. You have to earn your way.” – Nick Saban https://t.co/2mzPQimPnp
