You are cordially invited to join me for a daily scripture break.

Colossians 4:6:

"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

Today we will examine the meaning of the metaphor “seasoned with salt.”  Salt was a critical mineral in ancient times; it was highly valued, preserved food, enhanced the taste of food, and in modest amounts good for your health.  Salt greatly enhances the experience of eating seasoned food.  This same principle applies to our speech.  How we express ourselves with measured gracious words is one of our most valuable skills as followers of Christ.  What am I talking about?  God’s Word is the foundation of our existence as Christians on Earth. When Jesus was tempted by Satan, in Matthew 4:4 it says, "Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”  That was the basis of His conversation with Satan.  By answering each temptation with the Word of God, Jesus resisted Satan.

We should remember those measured gracious words.  We should live  “... on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Those gracious words "that come from the mouth of God” are powerful.  In Hebrews 4:12 it describes God’s Word as, “... alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  This is one of the reasons I use direct quotes from the Bible so frequently.  God’s Word penetrates the hearts and minds of believers and non-believers.  These scriptural verses are authoritative; I read them, pray these references out loud, I study them, I meditate them.

Actually, this was a way of life for the Lord. Jesus spent much time in prayer, at a very early age Jesus was found in the temple receiving instruction and asking questions about the Law (Luke 2:46).  The inference is Jesus studied the Law for years (not formally) before He entered His public ministry.  When He began His ministry He was prepared in Word and Spirit; His conversation was “seasoned with salt.”  In Luke 4:22 it says, "And all spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from His mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph's son?”  It is interesting when people began to observe how well Jesus presented Himself and expressed Himself in His speech but He didn’t conform to their expectations of societal norms they were motivated to denigrate Him a little.  They asked, “ isn’t He Joseph (the carpenter’s ) son?"  In those days, it mattered what station in life your father held. To my knowledge, Jesus was not formally educated in the Law as a Pharisee for example.  Jesus laid out the roadmap for us as members of the Body of Christ.  Our Lord is our perfect example.    Jesus captured the imagination of the people with His measured gracious words seasoned with salt.

Let’s take a closer look at the scriptures that discuss the importance of learning this skill set.   First, let's consider that speaking with gracious words with seasoned salt does not mean manipulation or deception.   It means giving God’s Word primacy in our speech with no filthy, crude language. (Ephesians 5:4, Matthew 12:36). Outlined below is a summary of the steps necessary to go out and evangelize the world with your conversation “full of grace and seasoned with salt."

1.  With the confession of your sins, asking for and accepting forgiveness of your sins, repenting to change your ways, and accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior you become a follower of Christ. One final step is to be baptized. Salvation through Jesus is a prerequisite to possessing the ability to speak with gracious words.

2.  With baptism you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  He acts as your teacher, counselor, guide, and seals you with the mark of salvation.  (I Peter 3:15,  Romans 8:11)

3.  Studying God’s Word and obeying the guidance of the Holy Spirit will lead to the development of a renewed mind, a well-formed conscience, and born-again spirit. (Ephesians 4:15, Psalm 19:14)

4.  With time we mature in the Lord and we become doers of the Word.  (Matthew 12:34, Ephesians 4:15, Proverbs 15:1, I John 4:1, Proverbs 16:21, Psalm 37:30)

5.  The Holy Spirit backs these gracious words with His power. (Acts 1:8 )

Here are some of the key references for this blueprint listed below.

1. Matthew 5:13 - "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."

2. I Peter 3:15 - "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect..."

3. Ephesians 4:15 - "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ."

4. Mark 9:50 - "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”

5. Psalm 19:14 - "May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer."

6. Romans 8:11 - "And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you."

7. Proverbs 16:21- "The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction."

8. Psalm 45:2 - "You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever."

9. Luke 6:45 - "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."

10. Psalm 37:30 - "The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just."

11. Proverbs 25:11-12 - "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.”

12. Ephesians 5:4 - "Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”

13. Proverbs 15:1 - "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

14. I John 4:1 - "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

15. Matthew 12:36 - "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,…”

This abbreviated study began with our goal (Colossians 4:6).  We as Christians should aspire to grow consistently in our Christian faith as Jesus provided the perfect example cited in Luke 4:22.  Conversation seasoned with salt isn’t about deception or manipulation but the rather reflects the Word described in Hebrews 4:12 and Luke 6:45.   It is amazing how the Holy Spirit orchestrates His ministry to give us the correct words to pierce the hearts of the lost at the right time and place. It really leaves me speechless.
