I started this account to subliminally address a simple idea: what gets labeled “retro” or “vintage” is often just work that respects place, continuity, and constraint rather than chasing novelty. Any new aesthetic won’t come from declaring a single “correct” look and scaling it across an entire continent. The United States is too large, too diverse, too environmentally and culturally fragmented for that to work. Aesthetic monoculture fails here for the same reason it fails ecologically.

Regionalism is the answer, but it requires intention. It means funding local architects, artists, and makers who are embedded in their regions and understand its climate, materials, labor, and history. When aesthetics are mass produced from a handful of cultural centers, they lose meaning and become branding exercises rather than culture.

Europe understands this instinctively. Countries the size of American states sustain radically different architectural traditions, craft lineages, and urban forms, often separated by only a few hundred miles, because local talent is supported and allowed to lead. Italian regionalism alone contains more variation than most global design movements. The future isn’t one aesthetic imposed from above. It’s many regional ones, funded, trusted, and allowed to grow.

A heavy embrace of local cultures is the answer.

finally finished clair obscur: expedition 33 on stream last night. here are my thoughts
