This is your must read this week.
It is about leukemia and the powers and limits of science and the terrifying dangers of the turn against it. It is human and excoriating and beautiful.

This is the 2nd mainstream tech podcast @EliLillyandCo CEO Dave Ricks has done in the past month or so (he also went on @theallinpod).
He’s really the first Pharma CEO I can think of who has broken into the mainstream zeitgeist.
Great ambassador for the field and hopefully a harbinger to come of more generalist interest in biotech as the field re-focuses on more large market, general population diseases and health issues (obesity, mental health, pain, dementia) that will be in the public eye.
In 35 years doing public relations — a field that can attract too many pretenders and prevaricators — I've never seen so much sociopathic lying from official media spokespersons. This is a horribly negative trend but should not be taken as proof that "lying works" and "everyone's doing it." Corporate communication at its best remains standards-based, and more often than most people realize, it is the PR pro advising the c-suite to communicate candidly and transparently. Leaders who lie on purpose to deceive the public are propagandists. Those who tell it straight are ethical communicators.
Utah lost a legend yesterday in the passing of Caroline Klein. She was truly one of a kind. Ash and I and the rest of the SEG team will miss her every single day. She left us a post to read after her passing, a lasting gift and part of her wisdom. Working with CK was a highlight of my career. Her presence—and all she shared—
Miss you already CK 🙏🏼

Laughing at themselves was the right move, because humor does four crucial things:
1) Connect with a new audience
Even for people who don’t care about Apache Airflow®, being in on the joke together forms a connection with Astronomer
2) Defuse tension
By joining the ridicule, they’re no longer its object
3) Get closure
They said it out loud, the joke is tapped, everyone can now move on
4) Signal a fresh start
The CEO and HR lady are gone, it’s a new management team, and making light of this shows they’ve “consciously uncoupled” from the past
Years ago, a mentor said to me: “It’s your job to have the highest quality standards of anybody you work with. You’ll face pressure to lower them every day. Don’t do it. If you can set a high standard and simply maintain it, you’ll do very well for yourself.”
Bezos once said: "The thing I've noticed is when the anecdotes and the data disagree, the anecdotes are usually right. There's something wrong with the way you are measuring it."
Applies to so much more than business. Never let a statistic blind you from seeing the naked truth before your eyes.
