Deacon Johnny Hollman, Sr. was killed on 8/10/23 by a 23 year-old officer who tased him repeatedly *after* being trained by @Atlanta_Police. He said “I can’t breathe” at least 16x. That’s what their deescalation “training” does.
mass turnouts for public comment? wrong way to engage. direct nonviolent actions like living in the trees you want to save? wrong way to engage. a democratic referendum? wrong way to engage. see the pattern?
Amazing turn out at our 35th anniversary social and fundraiser last night! We raised over $2,000 to help @PNHP start @snahp_national chapters in med schools across the country! Thank you to all those who donated and have joined our cause for healthcare reform! 🍑#m4a
1 If you are an Atlanta healthcare worker or student show up on Monday at city council by 11AM. It is important to show solidarity with the movement to stop cop city which is a movement for the future of the city of Atlanta - one defined by vast inequality and the carceral state
1. Yes this is negligent healthcare - which is the norm not the exception in US prisons and jails. The issue however is not simply poor medical care but the carceral environment itself. calls to “improve” medical care alone are not enough as these institutions are built to…
646 rural hospitals are at risk of closing due to financial concerns. That's 30% of all rural hospitals in the US. Georgia is 10th in the country with 20 rural hospitals at risk. This is a devastating example of health care inequity in our country. #M4A

This study has been years underway — I'm happy to see it published today in the Milbank Quarterly.
"Century-Long Trends in the Financing and Ownership of American Healthcare."
A short thread.
THREAD. Many progressives are not paying enough attention to what is happening with Cop City in Atlanta. The level of state violence against local people organizing to protect an essential forest from becoming a training center for militarized cops is escalating.
So...the DOE decided that SARS-CoV-2 originated with a "lab leak."
The available evidence shows overwhelmingly that the pandemic started at Huanan market via zoonosis.
But affirmative evidence of lab origin could change my view. What kind of evidence? 🧵

Why is Fulton County (where 90% of Atlanta is located), which jails its residents at nearly three times the rate of other urban counties, threatening to defund its alternative response & pre-arrest diversion program?🧵
These three paragraphs from an article about the wave of jail deaths sweeping the United States will teach you more about the criminal punishment system than anything I've ever posted.
A great turn out at the @PNHPGeorgia Fall Social last night at @ManuelsTavern! Nurses, medical students, physicians, and journalists came together to talk about GA's failing health system and the importance of #universalhealthcare and #MedicareForAll 🍑
public records show an outbreak of lice & scabies in a Fulton County Jail mental health dorm, impacting 100% of the people there. 90% were found to be significantly malnourished, with muscle wasting commonly seen in people with late stage cancers.
@iSpineDoc @GurleyGuy @olsonplanner I didn’t mean to imply that cutting doctor pay would magically solve healthcare costs. I do think though that there are issues with physician compensation in the US that @_Eric_Reinhart outlines much better here than I could myself:
A thread about why the US medical profession urgently needs to face some hard truths about its ethical status and role in American society. Most doctors believe we belong to one of the most virtuous, caring, and progressive professions; reality has long been very different. 1/
@drjphazelton @GurleyGuy @olsonplanner The “to whom” part of your question is a huge one to answer but broadly I think that many frontline health workers are tragically underpaid for what they do. Medics, nurses, technicians, etc.
@drjphazelton @GurleyGuy @olsonplanner That’s a fair point - the redistribution of that exorbitant wealth on the “business side” should take precedence. And frankly I think if physician pay were cut to the level it is in most other wealthy countries, it should be paired with massive debt relief or free tuition
Harm reduction saved my life. Years into recovery, I never forgot the kindness of Haven Wheelock.
My family had forced me into treatment twice, only for me to relapse and OD.
I walked into the syringe exchange scared and alone. I’d had a hep c exposure. 1/
61 people are dead in just 48 hours from a growing cholera outbreak at Haiti National Penitentiary. When an epidemic breaks out in a prison, the most essential health intervention is to release everyone and provide them with care and proper prevention resources. 1/
