Dawg KH fans cannot go saying the "side games" are all mandatory but then go "uh... except that one"
Either none of them are or you accept that only some minor shit from the "side games" even actually matters to follow up KH games and they're mostly all filler games, like MoM is straight up recap filler but also literally is the actual epilogue to KH3, straight up has KH3 UE4 cutscenes cut out of KH3 and used in that.
Most of CoM is filler shit retreading KH1 worlds, the only important shit is just the scenes in the white castle rooms pertaining to Org13/Castle oblivion/Namime, and you can go the entire KH2 without even knowing about Sora slowly losing memories in Castle Oblivion because that shit is not even touched on in KH2 in any meaningful way and doesn't matter to the grander KH story overall anyway.
Most of ReCoded also retreading KH1 shit with the only important shit being Mickey's letter.
Most of Days is retreading KH2 worlds with some added side shit regarding the Org just doing day to day filler work, filling in the gaps KH2 left regarding Roxas/Axel (which if it released today would just be a DLC mind you), and all with a BRAND NEW CHARACTER in Xion who did not even exist in KH's canon prior to Days and who only really exists just for the sake of trying to fill out Days into a full length game with Xion's story being self contained within Days itself.
Like Days is to KH2 what Crisis Core is to FF7 in a lot of ways, touches on shit from prior game (KH2/FF7) while introducing new characters they pretend always existed just for the sake of trying to make a full length story.
Xion's presence in KH3 undoes her story, Roxas's in KH3 undoes his, KH3 is so preoccupied with trying to set up future shit that it also undoes past shit and then has a weak resolution to present shit
So many plot points in KH3 are completely retconned from past KH games that you might as well not have even played them because their shit doesn't even matter anymore, the power of waking in KH3 is not even the same thing it was established to be in DDD, Xehanorts motive was literally retconned offscreen between BBS and KH3.
There is literally nothing that happens in DDD that even matters towards the overall story that you don't find out in KH3 itself, really the only one of the "side games" that truly matters to contextualise things is KH BBS, and that's partly because it was originally going to be a console KH game too but only didn't because of nebulous reasons.
Do I really need to play DDD to understand Axel and Kairi now have a Keyblade when KH3 already gives you enough to go off of regarding that? Like who gives a shit what young Xehanort is doing in DDD?
I played CoM when it came out on GBA and barely remembered shit about it or why anything in it even mattered by the time I played KH2.
The KH side games are canon but that doesn't mean they are all mandatory to follow along. KH has convoluted shit but it's not even hard to follow even if you only played KH1, KH2 and KH3, most people playing KH don't even care, they just want to bash shadow creators in the face with a keyblade and Donald Duck is there.
Btw you can take my comment about MoM and apply it to all the KHX/KHUX/KHUXDR shit, like 300+ hours of filler garbage and like only 10 minutes of story that might actually matter to contextualise future KH4 shit.
I’ll forever mourn the fact that the COM soundtrack isn’t on any streaming services because i love this version of lazy afternoons smmmm. I especially love how crazy they went with the harmonica it gives such a nostalgic vibe to it.
