On this date, we also commemorate the last Byzantine emperor, the hero Constantine XI Palaeologos, who fell defending the City.

According to tradition, when the Turkish sultan asked him to surrender the City, he replied: “It is neither my right nor anyone else’s among those who dwell in this City to surrender it to you. For we have all reached the common decision to die willingly, and we shall not spare our lives.”
