The ethnographer was P. Carnegy, who was given nonsense about Rajputs by Brahmins from East UP/Awadh and their allied Muslim clerics. I haven't had the time to debunk this but this is the root of the problem. Carnegy also mentions that Rajputs didn't give him this information.
