The pandemic forced many migrant workers to return to their hometowns, and in the process, many children—especially girls—had to drop out of school. For some, like Nandita (name changed) from Devipur, the situation turned even worse. Her parents decided to marry her off at a young age.
But Nandita didn’t give up. She reached out to the Childline helpline (1098), and after a visit from a counsellor and the district child protection officer, her parents realised the importance of education, the dangers of child marriage, and the legal consequences they could face. Thankfully, her parents agreed to let Nandita return to school.
Nandita’s story is just one example. There are thousands of girls in similar situations, facing the threat of early marriage instead of education.
We need to do more to protect their rights and ensure they have the opportunity to build a future.
