15 years ago, I spent five months in psychiatric care.
On Saturday, I received a Mental Health & Wellbeing Award in London.
When I came to the UK in 2008, I came to study and build a better life.
But in the middle of my studies, I experienced a mental health crisis that changed everything.
After leaving psychiatric care, I had to rebuild my life from zero couchsurfing with family and friends.
Then I took a job as a construction labourer. At 30, I went back to university as an undergraduate.
Then I worked my way into project management, became an inspirational speaker and mentor supporting communities and young people around the country and internationally.
Yesterday, that journey was recognised at the Zenith Global Awards in a room full of inspiring global changemakers.
A difficult chapter is not the end of your story.
There are still pages ahead that will surprise you.
Thank you to Zenith Global Health for this recognition.
And thank you to everyone who has listened to my story, shared it, supported me, or found a little hope in it.
We will continue to support one another to succeed. ❤️
There's a moment in the Bible where God told Joshua that everywhere his foot touched would be his.
Joshua 1:3
He didn't say everywhere you can see.
He said everywhere you step.
The territory is unlocked by movement.
Some of what God has for you is waiting on your next step.
Please carry your struggles with a touch of dignity. Venting doesn't always help. People treat you differently when they know too much information about you.
The moment I realize someone is committed to missing my point, I shut up. There’s no point explaining yourself to someone who’s determined not to understand you.
When I say God, I mean Jesus.
Not the universe. Not energy. Not luck. Not positive vibes. Not manifestation.
I mean Jesus Christ, the Son of God, crucified for our sins, buried, risen on the third day, and reigning forever.
You should never be expected to be the bigger person when you didn't create the discomfort in the first place. Too many people cause the chaos, cross the line, then want you to swallow your feelings just to keep the peace. Nah. Accountability matters. Being mature doesn't mean accepting disrespect or cleaning up messes you didn't make. Sometimes protecting your peace means standing firm and letting folks sit in the consequences of what they caused.
Before judging someone for being distant from their family, remember that not everyone comes from a loving home. For some people, family was their first heartbreak, first betrayal, and deepest source of pain.
A Mandate for Change
For too many care leavers, turning 18 means having the rug pulled from under them. The care, nurturing and security disappear, replaced by rent, bills and a fight to survive.
After years of trauma, some are forced to choose between full-time education and keeping a roof over their heads, without family to fall back on.
PAs and youth workers can only do so much. They don’t have all the solutions, and they cannot carry a failing system alone.
Support and care are two different things. Two hours a month cannot replace someone being there.
Too many care leavers are still living in survival mode. In 28 years, that reality hasn’t changed.
Corporate parenting cannot end when childhood does.
But this is the reality for many across the UK in our so called CARE system.
Police called to children’s homes for smoking, answering back, refusing to go to bed or get up. Even going into the kitchen after hours.
Would we call the police on our own children for that?
Children in care should never be criminalised for behaviour we would respond to with patience in our own homes.
If you’re building a business around children’s lives, you owe them more than a bed. #FGUK
People don't want to understand you - they want to label you. You speak up and suddenly you're too emotional. You stay quiet and now you've changed. You set boundaries and somehow, you become the villain. People rarely listen to hear you, They listen to judge you. And no matter how carefully you try to explain yourself, They'll still twist your words to fit the version of you they've already created in their heads. So stop breaking yourself just to be understood. Let them misunderstand you. Let them talk. Your peace doesn't need their permission.
Nobody talks about the fact that the Holy Spirit is described as a helper, comforter, counselor, and advocate.
John 14:16
Not a judge.
Not an accuser.
Not a burden.
A helper.
Living inside every believer.
Available every moment.
Most people are walking around with unlimited access to divine help they never ask for.
Giving too much grace to the wrong people teaches them how to disrespect you. Some individuals lack the emotional intelligence to appreciate your patience. They mistake your kindness for their own superiority. Stop wasting your energy on people who take your character for granted. Save your grace for those who actually reciprocate the effort.
The Bible was written on three continents:
- Europe
- Asia
- Africa
In three languages:
- Hebrew
- Aramaic
- Greek
By over 40 different men:
- Kings
- Prophets
- Fishermen
- A doctor
- And others
Yet it tells one unified story:
- Creation
- Fall
- Redemption
- Restoration
And about one Figure:
- Jesus Christ
All glory to God!
A friend of mine has been living in the UK for about six years. He has a wife and four children in Nigeria.
For some time now, he has been having disturbing dreams where he sees himself dying in the UK. Because of this, he started thinking about what would happen to his family if anything ever happened to him.
This January, he asked his wife to open a bank account in her name. After she opened it, she sent him the account details, and he transferred ₦50 million into the account.
He received the transaction alert in his email, while she received an SMS alert on her phone.
You know that feeling when you book a flight for 50 quid and somehow it ends up costing 100?
Getting seats together, correcting a typo, another charge here and there, it all adds up.
When the cost of living is already squeezing people, those endless extras can feel relentless.
So we're changing the rules for you.
Parents won't need to pay a penny extra just to sit next to their own children.
You'll be able to fix any name errors on your booking free of charge.
And because the last thing you want once you're on the plane is more stress, we're working with the industry to make sure that disruptive passengers who have been banned from one airline can be banned from flying with other airlines too.
I know holidays are expensive and these are small things, but hopefully they'll make your trip just that little bit cheaper and easier.
That's exactly the kind of thing I want this government to keep on fixing.
