Tanzania's ambitions of building Africa's longest standard gauge railway (SGR) are on track with the launch of high-speed electric train services between commercial hub Dar es Salaam and the capital Dodoma.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially inaugurated passenger train services on the Dar es Salaam-Dodoma route today.

This brings to fruition decades of ambitions of the country to connect the commercial and administrative capitals with modern train services.

The dream started way back from the founding father Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

Three successive presidents - Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Benjamin Mkapa and Jakaya Kikwete - laid the groundwork for the SGR project.

But it was President John Magufuli who dared to begin construction of the first 720 kilometres of the SGR project.

When President Samia came into office in March 2021, her government expedited the construction of the SGR network and awarded contracts for an additional 1,800 kilometres of railroad.

This brings the length of the total SGR network currently under construction in Tanzania to over 2,100 kilometres, one of Africa's longest modern rail networks.

Samia's government also bought locomotives, passenger wagons and electric multiple units (EMUs) from Korea to begin train services from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma via Morogoro.

The new SGR passenger train services have halved the time used to travel by bus from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma to just four hours.

The express train takes 3:30 hours from the two cities, with maximum speeds of 160km/h.

The Tanzanian government has so far spent a total of $10.53 billion on the SGR project.

The 541-km stretch of the modern standard gauge railway running between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, which was launched today, was built at a cost of $3.1 billion.
