This was not planned and does not happen very often: Two equity papers from my group in as many weeks. This time we study winterization of generators, using '21 winter storm data and modeling the impact of power outages on Texas communities. #equity#resilience#electricity
Yes, this is the first paper from our series on equity-informed resilience planning. Thanks @IC2Institute for seed funding the work. All credit goes to our student @GizemTopluTutay. Here is the link for the free PDF for limited time: https://t.co/syrCJcZdwp

New paper by @ut_orie PhD student Gizem Toplu-Tutay and Profs. @jhasenbein and @KutanogluE:
"Impact of power outages depends on who loses it: Equity-informed grid resilience planning via stochastic optimization"

@mattkahn1966 Agreed! This is an example but definitely more doable than before for this and other applications (grid/community resilience, adaptation) w/ high-res prediction models, integrated databases, and powerful OR HW/SW. Enhancing support for decision makers beyond maps is another key!
Another fruit (paper!) of my group's collaborative labor is officially available. Thanks to my co-authors @BrentAustgen@jhasenbein and S. Santoso, and @EnergyUT for seed support. How detailed should your power physics be to have good resilience decisions? https://t.co/qFHMfYJS1i
Hot off the press. Product of our collaboration w/ @SETRAC_TX, focusing on forecast-informed planning of hospital and nursing home evacuations before hurricanes. Timely before a hurricane season expected to break records @NOAA. @GizemTopluTutay@jhasenbein https://t.co/Nigwa5qPT1
I'm honored to be the co-advisor of George. He is not only a great, talented, hard-working researcher but also a positive, pleasant person. He will make a great professor at @umsl!
Siqiang (George) Guo is a 2024 @ut_orie PhD graduate! ๐ค๐
George will be a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Supply Chain & Analytics at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (@umsl) beginning in August. #HookEm
Two of my PhD students defended their dissertations in the past month. Proud of Drs. @BrentAustgen and @A_RShukla, both brave to begin grid resilience journey with me not long ago. What they started has been so critical for my group. Happy to have co-advised both with @jhasenbein
Excited to announce my PhD defense. Please join if you can. I will also host the event online via Zoom at:

Edit to the flyer: I was lucky to have not one but two super cool advisors: @KutanogluE@jhasenbein.
Yes, glad to see another fruit of our interdisciplinary effort btw operations research and electrical engineering. Great work by students in both programs, but Joshua was the main go-getter. Btw, more is in pipeline, so stay tuned!

This Friday's @ut_orie seminar will be given by ORIE PhD candidate Ashutosh Shukla (@A_RShukla). Join us in ETC 5.132 at 2pm for his talk on "Scenario-based #Optimization Models for Power Grid #Resilience to Extreme Flooding Events."
In their new research project supported by the @IC2Institute, @ut_orie Profs. @KutanogluE and @jhasenbein will design models to predict which communities are most vulnerable to extreme weather events and resulting #infrastructure failures.
Thanks for the support, @IC2Institute! Looking forward to collaboration with @IC2Institute and @jhasenbein. If you are a community organization that can help us identify/quantify disparate effects of #extremeweather on vulnerable communities or have data you can share, please DM.
IC2 is funding research with @ErhanKutanoglu and @JohnHasenbein to build decision support models and strategies that will help address how severe weather disproportionately affect marginalized populations.

This is a fun project we are starting with the most amazing @IC2Institute, feels like a natural extension of what we've been doing in our recent #resilience work: Need to measure #equity impacts on communities to analyze the effects of #extremeweather and resilience decisions.
