I think it was a bad decision to come back to India. It's time to go back to the US.

If one day, he asks me, why can't he get into the top IIT, but his SC/ST friend can, even with half his marks, and the same economic status, I will have no answer. I guess I will just have to say, it's because we don't care about merit, but representation.

Plenty of GC/OBC professors quietly dodge SC PhD students for as long as they can. Not cuz they hate Dalits but because they’ve done the math of risk management.
They fear that an ordinary academic conversation…this chapter is weak, your data is sloppy, rewrite this…can be turned into a caste atrocity complaint. Once that complaint is filed, the process itself is the punishment. Suspension. Inquiry. Police. Media. Campus protests. Years of career damage. Even if the professor is eventually cleared, the stain stays. The cost of a complaint is career-ending. The cost of just not taking the student is almost zero.

So the result is ugly. The student who was supposed to be protected by the SC-ST Act now faces a thinner pool of willing supervisors, less honest feedback and slower work…coz of the same Act.

We rarely discuss how the SC/ST Act works against SC-ST students in HEIs.
