The Chargers safety room had THREE players grade in the top-30 in coverage in 2025.
Derwin James-5th (83.7) 16 games
RJ Mickens-17th (73.4) 12 games
Tony Jefferson-26th (70.3) 13 games
The unit ranked first in passer rating allowed (56.3)
Yielded the second -fewest first downs in coverage (25)
And finished second in the league in interceptions (10).
Looking to build off that success in 2026, add in Elijah Molden who will be looking to return to 2024 form, Kendall Williamson, a valuable special teams contributor and rookie Genesis Smith, a true center-fielding free safety.
Excited to see what safeties coach Adam Fuller has in store going into his second season, for one of the better position groups on this team that isn’t talked about enough.
Chargers EDGE Khalil Mack on making the decision to return to the team for his 13th season.
"Coming back here, I wanted to be in a position to help the team win a championship. Through my actions I want to show how much it means to me"
Chargers EDGE Khalil Mack on the possibility of Tuli getting a contract extension:
"We talk about that often, hopefully that gets done soon, I'm excited for him"
Chargers EDGE Khalil Mack on Akheem Mesidor:
"Him coming on the field and wanting to get to work on the first day, just seeing how eager he is and the questions he asks...he's polished, he's got that attitude like he's ready to come on the field and ready to play"
The #Chargers and Derwin James have agreed to terms on a massive new extension to make him the NFL’s new highest-paid safety for the second time in his career, sources say.
James gets a 3-year, $75.6M deal. Negotiated by @DavidMulugheta of @AthletesFirst.
The Chargers did not sign a cornerback in free agency and did not select one in the seven rounds of the NFL Draft. Could they still add to the position between now and Week 1? Yes.
However, I believe they have a lot of confidence in former UDFA CBs, Nikko Reed and Eric Rogers to step up, going into their second year.
In 2025, Reed finished the preseason with a 91.1 coverage grade, allowing only 3 receptions on 10 targets and recorded a pick six. Additionally, he appeared in five regular season games and had a terrific pass deflection.
Rogers, became only the second corner since 2023 to not allow a reception on more than five targets in a preseason game, while also recording two interceptions (one for TD).
