I feel like I’m qualified to discuss this topic as someone who grew up listening to Vin Scully in LA and then spending my adulthood listening to Kuiper and Krukow.
Vin did both of their jobs. He barely had a second in the booth. The Dodgers games were simulcast also so he managed to do a TV broadcast that translated well to radio.
No one is better than Vin Scully
Now for the entertainment part … different broadcasts with different personalities. The Giants guys are probably more “entertaining” but I never felt listening to Vin that I wasn’t entertained. Just a different way of presenting a game to the viewer
San Francisco Giants announcer Mike Krukow will retire after this season, ending a 36-year career in which he and he best friend and former teammate, Duane Kuiper, formed one of the best broadcasting duos in baseball. For generations of Giants fans, Kruk is their voice of summer.
A little somethin', somethin' for those Tiger fans who said that Harris didn't get enough in return for Skubal. Five teams anonymously stated that the Tigers' ask for Skubal was really high. The Tigers were the first team in 22 yrs to get 2 top 100 prospects for a rental.
Ultimately, the Dodgers were able to acquire Tarik Skubal for a package less-than predicted for the same reason as they’re able to sign so many free agents: Other teams are scared of spending money
This time, other teams didn’t raise their bids because they can’t imagine trading away too much controllable talent for a rental and then having to spend money to fill the holes those players would’ve taken up for years to come
So, the Dodgers took two prospects they’ve acquired in roster-trim trades the last few years, and flipped them for the back-to-back Cy Young winner because they can afford to stomach those losses moving forward
Equivalents of LAD package for Skubal? Probably…
Brewers - Logan Henderson, Luis Lara or Jefferson Quero, JD Thompson
Rays - Brody Hopkins or Michael Forret, Brayden Taylor, Trevor Harrison
Cubs - Ben Brown, Josiah Hartshorn or Pedro Ramirez, Brooks Caple
Baseball Twitter is embarrassing itself with these Skubal trade takes.
How much do you think a team is giving up for a two-month rental? Nobody is trading a top-five prospect for that.
Shame on the Brewers but the Dodgers simply put together the best package.
River Ryan is DOPE. Just needs to be healthy.
The pitching fan in me is stoked to watch Melton and River on a team that will let both have a long runway inside the rotation.
Mookie Betts traded bc Red Sox were cheap with their extension
Braves chose Olson over Freeman
Angels refused to win around Ohtani
Yankees wouldn’t pay Yamamoto more than Cole
Arte vetoed a Pages trade
Rays didn’t want to pay Glasnow
Cardinals gave up on Edman
A’s DFA’d Max Muncy
& now Tigers refused to pay Tarik Skubal.
These baseball GMs make it too easy.
Have to believe teams like Brewers/Rays could have acquired Skubal for better trade packages w/out wrecking farm system. Too many risk-averse organizations. To win a championship, especially in a small market, sometimes it's like the Theo Epstein line in '16: "If not now, when?"
