Rock and Ice deformation lab at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory focusing on fault and glacial processes, carbon mineralization, and dynamics of icy moons
New publication alert: periodic ice friction paper from McCarthy, Skarbek, and Savage has made its way through the system. Yay! https://t.co/GgEjSzmywc
Ok one more for you because I can’t hold back. Tossing a rock never felt better. Seemingly solid… some of the kinetic energy is reflected back with a recoil of mud. Many analogies with the response of a planet’s crust to a n asteroid impact.
Publication alert: Rob Skarbek recently published a paper detailing a new GUI that analyzes oscillating friction data. He used it to analyze ice friction and found that RS values from oscillations can be rate-weakening, when s-s measurements say otherwise. https://t.co/YyzUJ7qsYM
LDEO's Catalina Sanchez-Roa is rubbing elbows with world leaders at COP26. Follow her to learn more about what's happening there and in the science of decarbonization.
Excellent first day at #COP26 with the official opening, speeches by Alok Sharma and several delegations. Plenty of excitement too in Heathrow and Glasgow as people arrive
Publication alert! Seth Saltiel just published a paper showing velocity-weakening behavior in an ice on till system measured in our lab. You can check it out here: https://t.co/BOOXZNkWZ5
If you are awake (and are registered), come check out the PPEM session at AGU about new tools for studying rock deformation in about a half hour (7 am EST): https://t.co/NHd9b4eqyt
Big congrats to visiting student Vishaal Singh on passing your tech review with flying colors. On to defend in April! We are so thrilled and honored to have you working in the lab with us!
Our virtual lab meetings every week let us check in on each other and learn about each other’s research projects. Hope everyone’s staying safe and healthy!
Special shoutout to ALL MINORITIES IN STEM. You are not only destroying the systemic racism that exists in many parts of the 🌏, but you are creating a just & equal earth for the unborn! Future generations thank you! Don't give up now.

Why geology rocks! We give lots of ❤️ to chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy, etc.) but I want you to know why I became a #geoscientist. I take all those bio, chem, phys, & math courses I took (there were a lot) & apply it toward understanding our 🌏. #GeoExplorer#BlackInSTEM
This iron pyrite ammonite fossil beautifully shows off one of the coolest features of these ancient animals. The fossils of these shells often have well preserved 'suture lines', the plant-like patterns in this picture.
