We have successfully concluded our three-month training program for early-career researchers. The program was designed to bridge scholarly research with real-world impact and to strengthen the capacity of early-career researchers in Somaliland. It consisted of four closely interlinked components that equipped participants with a solid understanding of research fundamentals and the local research context, while introducing them to the core principles of the research process.
The primary outcome was for participants to acquire new knowledge and further enhance their research skills. Participants attended weekly training sessions and three guest lectures, both online and in person. They are expected to publish research papers on various themes related to governance, geopolitics, and social issues.
We would like to thank David Otieno (Ph.D.), an Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Researcher at Amnesty International; Nicki L. Gerstner (Ph.D.), a Professor in the Future and Multidisciplinary Studies College at Seoul Cyber University and Lecturer of Education, Conflict and Peacebuilding at the Graduate School in the College of Education at Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea; and Aleksi Ylönen (Ph.D.), a Professor of Comparative Politics, Political Sociology, and History at the United States International University – Africa (USIU-Africa) in Kenya, and a Researcher at the University Institute of Lisbon’s Center for International Studies in Portugal. Your contributions and willingness to share your research experience with the participants were commendable. Thank you all for making this training successful.

The latest issue of Laas Geel Review (Volume 2, Number 1), available both in print and online at https://t.co/1uEnkjq5oL, features six substantive articles that examine critical issues related to Somaliland and the wider Horn of Africa region. The contributions cover a diverse range of topics: assessing health communication strategies to reduce maternal and child mortality in rural Hargeisa; exploring diaspora diplomacy in Somaliland with a focus on strategy, agency, and recognition challenges; presenting the legal case for Somaliland statehood from the perspective of a failed union to restored sovereignty; analyzing the intersection of maritime competition and the recognition–security nexus; evaluating Ethiopia’s dam diplomacy and its impact on the reconfiguration of Nile Basin power relations; and investigating crisis leadership decision-making patterns in multi-agency security management, drawing on a Kenyan case of civil disobedience.
On August 24, we launched the LGIR Diploma in International Relations & Diplomacy.
Our mission? To train professionals who are just as fluent in global political theory as they are in the specific dynamics of Africa and the Middle East.
This is diplomacy with a Global South lens. This is strategic analysis with cultural competence. This is where underrepresented perspectives become the mainstream.
We are building the professionals who will negotiate tomorrow’s toughest challenges.

Professor Mike’s public lecture on geopolitics and the Horn of Africa sparked meaningful engagement. We also visited Sheikh Ali Jawhar School, site of the transformative 1993 peace conference that institutionalized Somaliland’s Guurti and shaped its state structure.
It was a pleasure visiting Amoud University in Borama with Professor Michael Habte Woldemariam of the University of Maryland. We thank President Dr. Mohamed Musa, Professor Suleiman, and their team for their warm hospitality.
