Ambassador Bashir Goth (@baruud) discussed Somaliland’s long path toward recognition after the 1991 end of its union with Somalia.
He described the trials that culminated in Israel’s December 2025 decision to recognize Somaliland’s independence. 3/7
Palestinian statehood dominates Western and regional diplomacy. But it is far from the only unresolved question of recognition, borders, and self-determination in the Middle East and beyond.
Panel 3 at the Middle East Forum’s 2026 Policy Conference examined “The Players You’re Not Watching.” 🧵1/7
@somalilandusa It's actually a great point! I tried to transfer responsibility for Somaliland from Mogadishu to Addis when I was Assistant Secretary. Having Embassy Mogadishu cover Hargeisa is rubbing salt into the wound and makes no sense. Somaliland is its own country!
27 May Burco, 29 May Cadaadley, 31 May Hargeysa—1988-kii waa maalmo ku suntan halgan, geesinimo iyo naf-hurnimo. Waa maalmo lagu xasuusto halgamayaashii SNM iyo shacabka JSL ee u soo halgamay xorriyadda iyo sharafka ummaddooda. Alle ha u naxariisto dhammaan shuhadadii halganka.
This article by Iqra Salah is largely built on poorly imagined risks and speculative warnings designed to scare states away from recognizing Somaliland. It attempts to portray Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as the beginning of an impending geopolitical confrontation in the Red Sea, despite offering little concrete evidence for many of its claims.
The author repeatedly invokes the threat of Houthi attacks on Berbera’s infrastructure as retaliation for an alleged Israeli military presence there ,even though no such Israeli military presence currently exists in Berbera. Throughout the article, the Houthis are portrayed as an unstoppable regional force, with their size and capabilities exaggerated again and again, as if they are ten feet tall, rather than what they actually are: one of several rival armed factions competing for power inside Yemen.
At the same time, the article avoids seriously addressing the Houthis’ nature as an Iranian-backed proxy militia and completely ignores the increasingly discussed cooperation and coordination emerging between the Houthis and Al-Shabaab, particularly in the maritime domain across the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. Any serious discussion about regional security should examine those destabilizing realities instead of framing Somaliland itself as the problem.
The piece also gives credibility to the false propaganda about relocating Palestinians to Somaliland, despite repeated and explicit denials from both Jerusalem and Hargeisa that such an issue was ever discussed, let alone agreed upon.
What the article deliberately ignores is that Somaliland has existed since 1991 as a functioning, peaceful, and remarkably stable polity in one of the world’s most volatile regions. Somaliland did not buy sympathy through expensive lobbying campaigns or petro-dollar influence. It earned international goodwill through something far more credible: democratic governance, relative stability, regular elections, and its strategic importance along one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors.
That is precisely why Somaliland increasingly has friends abroad who support its cause voluntarily ,not because of conspiracies, foreign manipulation, or imaginary military schemes, but because Somaliland’s case stands on its own merits.
Somaliland earned the respect it has today through the work of its first generation of nation-builders.
The real question is: what are we doing now that will earn Somaliland respect 20 or 30 years from today?
Right now, it feels like we’re living off the achievements of previous generations rather than creating the next chapter.
@aiabdimusa@MDuale1 Mr Yusuf Gaboobe was born, raised, and educated in Aden, then later settled in Qatar, where he had a decent life. However, he traded that life for the SNM and Qaaxo. He became one of the top ranks in the SNM despite having no military background.
Yesterday’s celebrations in #Somaliland was possible because of the tremendous sacrifices of many brave souls. To the heroes we lost, we pray for you and the heroes still with us, we celebrate and salute your courage. SL owes you a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.🫡
It is time to recognise Somaliland it is time we recognise the reality on the ground the only democratic state in the Horn of Africa. #somaliland#freedom
@yGabobe@LenkaBula@JamaMusse@Somaalilanders@VOCfm Thank You Yusuf for your generous notes! Your ongoing, principled efforts are inspiring! This is a collective effort, indeed! On this auspicious occasion, I recall our engagement with the late AU Deputy Chair, Patrick Mazimhaka & his path-breaking AU 2005 Fact-finding report.
Few people have promoted Somaliland the way Ambassador Iqbal did, including through his books. He coined the phrase “Africa’s best-kept secret” to describe Somaliland. A great brother and steadfast supporter of Somaliland, he is deeply missed as the nation marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its independence.
A speech for the history books tonight by Somalilander @GavinWilliamson 👏👏👏
"The terrorist regime in Mogadishu will act every single day in order to put the people of this nation down.
That means we have to fight harder."
1000% 🔥
🚨New information about the two men presenting themselves as a professor–student team surveying lithium sites in Somaliland:
The Russian man is in fact an employee hired by the Somalian man.
How did they gain access to critical mineral sites in Somaliland??
#SCOOP: Former President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E Dr. @musebiihi, was today’s conferred with an Honorary PhD Certificate by the Golis University.
President Bihi earned this certificate for his contribution to the country's struggle & his leadership role in our nation.👏
When I visited Somaliland I was greatly impressed by the efforts the SL Govt is making in combatting cheetah trafficking and providing a sanctuary for rescued cheetahs. For a poor nation to use its own resources on protecting its wildlife is admirable!

So Iran can flirt with turning the Strait of Hormuz into a toll booth and suddenly it’s treated as a 'complicated legal question.'
If that's the standard, what exactly is stopping Somaliland from imposing its own transit fees at the southern gateway of the Red Sea?
Thanks to @JMeservey & @HudsonInstitute for hosting key #USA🇺🇲 gov’t & private sector stakeholders this morning for a serious roundtable discussion on the moral & strategic case for #Somaliland recognition with Sir @GavinWilliamson, former #UK🇬🇧 defense & education secretary.
