i think the "classic is just fun because of nostalgia" trope is a lazy explanation for why people like it.

Classic wows pacing, itemization, and rpg elements are why people love going back to it over and over. It is also the last time you legitimately uptake skills as you play.

Modern wow has so many skills, systems, currencies, zones etc. that onboarding a new player is basically impossible unless they really want to learn all of those things and watch a ton of YouTube.

i think they are an example of something that seems awesome but fundamentally changes the way the game is played.

The irony of this Nick Wright clip is almost too perfect. Nick says he’s “stunned by the media” for hyping the Chargers because he sees the holes himself: he doesn’t love the receivers, the interior OL is dealing with injuries, and he doesn’t think the defense is dominant.

Okay. But then he says when the Chargers inevitably fall short, he expects everyone to “make excuses” for Herbert by pointing out those exact same roster deficiencies.

Do you see the problem?

Nick just spent the first half of the argument explaining why it would be difficult for the Chargers to succeed, and then wants to blame Herbert when they don’t. In fact, by Nick’s own description, Herbert getting this team to the playoffs in the first place should be evidence of how much he’s overcoming.

You can’t simultaneously argue, “Here are all the reasons this roster isn’t good enough to win,” and then say, “Watch how they’re going to use those reasons to unfairly exonerate Herbert when they don’t win.”

That isn’t exposing an excuse. That’s describing the context yourself and then refusing to let the context count.
