Every day I am in awe of international students. Doing a PhD in your native language and home country is hard. Doing it in a non-native language, in a different country and different culture is so much harder. You are not stupid. You are legends.

Now the control experiment. Women out there - if you care about gender equality, please like this tweet and spread (men, help spread this too, but do not like). Go!
@OpenAcademics This is a good resource, but for the autism one I think 'clear' language is better than 'simple'. There's a risk of oversimplifying by cutting out words, which can make statements ambiguous (using technical rather than 'simple' language can be helpful in removing ambiguity).

Yet I also want to raise awareness that trans people are not some new trend, and exist almost exclusively outside of controversial media stories. I guess the potential benefit outweighs the personal anxiety? 3/3
I've been asked whether I'd like to participate in an early careers/ equality & diversity panel. I'd like to add my voice, but I'm also scared to speak about my experiences as a trans person in the current political climate.
This feels like a strange problem because 1/
As a cis-passing, white, male oxbridge graduate I'm normally insulated from discrimination. I'm worried I'll be misconstrued as a girl who felt pressure to transition as a means of avoiding discrimination in STEM, or be asked to morally justify medial treatment I've received. 2/
@thetracysimone So much of my resilience in my MRes/ 1st year came from talking with my cohort and informal mentorship of more advanced students. Your position is like learning to be an astronaut by flying round the dark side of the moon - it's uniquely difficult, but you're doing great 😊
@mama_c2 I know nothing at all about football, but as a trans person @NevilleSouthall's tweets are a lovely respite from the rest of the dumpster fire that is twitter ❤️
(I also commandeer his baby sloth pics for my mum, who is not on twitter but is endlessly delighted by sloths)
@thetracysimone Give yourself at most* 10 minutes of trying to figure it out yourself before getting the technician to come and help. They're happy to help, and it makes asking for help easier in the future if you have frequent contact with them. (*it also stops you making any problems worse!)

Here’s a 30 second summary.

Every. Single. One.
@watermicrobe The lecturer who gave me a research project at undergrad and kept my sticky note saying "it works!" over her desk; the post doc who patiently taught me how to work in a chemistry lab; my first rotation project supervisor who left an "it works!" note for me; my PI...
