The methods of Natural Family Planning cultivate this holistic love. By encouraging open communication about fertility and family planning, NFP strengthens emotional intimacy and fosters greater respect and cooperation between spouses.

As spouses discern God’s will for their marriage and family life, they may decide to postpone pregnancy for “well-grounded reasons [. . .] arising from the physical or psychological condition of husband or wife, or from external circumstances” (HV, 16). In such circumstances, a husband and wife will have times of sexual abstinence during the wife’s fertile window. These periods of sexual abstinence are opportunities to strengthen sacrificial and self-giving love while supporting spiritual and emotional growth.
