Those who use municipal services must pay for them. Revenue collection is critical to fixing Johannesburg and delivering the services residents deserve.
Earlier today, alongside MMC for Human Settlement, we conducted a focused operation in Fleurhof as part of the City of Johannesburg’s ongoing efforts to restore order, uphold the rule of law, and promote safer communities for residents.
The operation targeted the Fleurhof Hostel, which is scheduled for demolition to facilitate future housing initiatives aimed at improving living standards and addressing housing needs within the area.
The City is committed to supporting affected South African families through arrangements for temporary accommodation, while undocumented foreign nationals are being processed by the Department of Home Affairs in accordance with legal procedures.
Johannesburg remains dedicated to preventing lawlessness, unsafe living conditions, and illegal occupation from compromising the dignity and safety of our communities. We continue to work towards building a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous Johannesburg for all.
Marble Towers is required to settle their outstanding debt of R14 million owed to the city. Due to non-payment, measures have been implemented to disconnect their services and revoke access until the financial obligation is fulfilled.
Whenever we try to tidy up the city and ensure compliance, we often face resistance. Similarly, if tenants are non-compliant or residing illegally, the law must run its course. No one is above the law.
Our job is to restore order, apply by-laws fairly, and safeguard the interests of the country and its residents. Law enforcement and compliance efforts can't be applied selectively to some and not others. We are going to the streets tomorrow and our legal teams will fight on our behalf ✊

A bold vision is underway to transform the Johannesburg inner city through the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Precinct.
As part of this, the City is proposing street renamings to reflect a more inclusive and meaningful urban landscape.

Is my participation really taken seriously, or is this just a formality?
This is not a tick-box exercise. The Municipal Systems Act legally requires municipalities to incorporate community inputs into the final IDP. All comments submitted during the 21-day minimum consultation period must be documented, considered, and responded to. The IDP gets tabled in Council and forms the basis for budget allocation. Your input has legal weight and institutional impact.
