Setanta Sports dared to challenge Sky's stranglehold on Premier League football, winning the rights to 46 live games in 2006 and building a portfolio that stretched across the SPL, rugby, boxing, and racing.
But the business was built on borrowed money, and the debt eventually caught up with them. After missing a £10 million Premier League rights payment, the UK operation collapsed in June 2009 with over 200 jobs lost overnight.
The Irish arm survived the wreckage, eventually becoming Eir Sport, and Premier Sports also emerged from the ruins.
Anyone remember Setanta?
@piersmorgan@m8arteta 'Tortuous years.' Fuck me. You've won countless cups, been in Europe a majority of my life time & never finished below 8th (i'm 34). God help you if you ever had to endure a relegation battle.
Oh goodie … Piers can come in and have photos taken with the 4 awards we’ve won …
Or maybe he will be sniffing the seat that Martin Keown sits on to get even closer to his beloved Arsenal .
Everton are working on a deal to sign Hayden Hackney from Middlesborough. The 23-year-old is attracting strong interest from several Premier League clubs, but Everton are working intensely to convince Hackney that Merseyside is the right step in his career 🔵
Another award for Jordan Pickford. 👊🏆
The Everton and England No.1 has won the @premierleague Goalkeeper Performance of the Season award. His standout display against Brighton — which included that crucial penalty save to deny Danny Welbeck — helped secure a big win in our first-ever home league game at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
A clean sheet and a penalty save to help @Everton to victory in their first match at Hill Dickinson Stadium 🧤
Jordan Pickford wins @Microsoft Goalkeeper Performance of the Season 👊
Received this absolute work of art in the post from @rwilkinson007 yesterday. One of the rarest shirts we ever worn (once in a 1982 fa cup tie at Upton Park). Cannot explain the absolute quality and craftsmanship of it. Please follow and DM him for any requests.
@jim_keoghan That ball for Richarlison in the derby, was one of the best nights I had during covid times. Some player, gutted we didn't get to see him at Goodison once fans where allowed back in.
@rawedgespassion I get what you're saying. I'm only 34 so Moyes is the manager i've whose sides i've grown up with really & given me my best memories as a Blue. But ultimately he's failed time & again when it matters most. It's make or break this summer window, goos start vital as well.
@Mrjbaines@DaleJohnsonBBC Apologies bud, I mean make the league cup a competition for the sides not in European football. Different side in Europe each year, give more teams a chance, instead of the so called big 6 sides playing weakened sides.
@BillEvram Needs to change next season. Would take 13th again if it meant winning the league cup. Bollocks to resting players in fucking September/October as well, still not over that early exit to Wolves 😂
