I once advocated in a case where a pastor was strangling his kids and wife whenever he got mad, driving drunk, breaking furniture … I told his elder board to call the police, but was informed, “At our church, we believe in grace.”

Thankfully, I recorded the entire phone call. I sent it to other church leaders and the local sheriff. I won’t share identifying details, but the pastor is no longer a pastor.

All that to say, that elder board doesn’t represent all men any more than the jury in the Clancy trial represents all women.

In 1920, women beat men for every available town seat in Jackson, Wy.

They then appointed women to every remaining office. The “petticoat rulers,” raised the treasury tenfold and fixed the town.

This was before the 19th Amendment. Wyoming women had voted since 1869, and they used it.

Grace Miller won the mayoralty 56–28. Rose Crabtree beat her husband, the outgoing mayor, for a council seat 50–31.
