Yesterday I stood with students and faculty at the University of Alberta rally with my friend @HMcPhersonMP.

I join my Alberta NDP colleagues in calling Danielle Smith and her Minister of Advanced Education to investigate the decisions of the Universities of Calgary and Alberta Boards of Governors to remove lawful, peaceful student protests on their campuses.

We must protect freedom of speech and the rights to peacefully protest on our campuses.

One of the things that got me involved in politics was student activism. I have attended many rallies in the quad. I've attended rallies calling for peace in the Middle East. What's happening right now in Gaza is a genocide. Young people around the world are calling for a ceasefire and they should be safe to engage in peaceful protest.

Alberta NDP Critic for Justice, Irfan Sabir, and Alberta NDP Critic for Advanced Education, Rhiannon Hoyle, issued the following joint-statement in response to the events at demonstration at the University of Calgary:

"We are deeply troubled by reports of what happened at the University of Calgary last night. Students should be able to peacefully protest. Our post-secondary institutions must be places of respectful conversations, enlightened debate and constructive solutions to bring about a more peaceful world.

"At an institution that should champion freedom of speech, the actions of the Calgary Police appeared to be disproportionate to the actions of protestors. They also appear inconsistent to previous reactions by police to protests in other settings. As a result, we believe last night’s incident warrants an independent investigation by ASIRT.

"All students on campus must be free from discrimination. No student should feel unsafe as they attend class and must feel free to be who they are, without fear. All those advocating for a ceasefire and the return of all hostages should be recognized for their message and their right to speak out. We denounce and have zero tolerance for hate in all forms, be it antisemitism, anti-Palestinian racism or any other form of discrimination.""

I am deeply troubled by the images, video footage and stories emerging from the University of Calgary last night.

I was a U of C student who protested on issues that were important to me. I think it is a fundamental right, particularly at a university, for people to be allowed to express their disagreement and displeasure with decisions being taken by those in power.

What is particularly troubling to me about this incident is that when right-wing extremists blockaded an Alberta border crossing and shut down hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity it was allowed to go on for two weeks. I am incredibly troubled that the response to people voicing their opinions on human rights was so much harsher than the response to people we know were stockpiling weapons and planning to kill RCMP officers.

Antisemitism and Islamophobia are on the rise on campuses — every student deserves to feel safe on campus. What happened last night does nothing to help.

I fully understand that police often have more information than the public, and they may not be able to release it. However, this appears to be a disproportionate response, particularly in light of how the Coutts blockade was handled.

Students, human rights activists and the public deserve a full and immediate investigation by an independent body.

In a time when the idea of freedoms have been co-opted by those who wish to pursue their own selfish ends and refuse to recognize that rights come with responsibilities, it is more important than ever that we safeguard people’s fundamental rights.

Conversations about differing values, difficult questions and hard conversations are the cornerstone of democracy. Shutting down protests on campus, refusing to allow students and human rights advocates to express their values and perspective is absolutely not the society we should be building.
