‘Labour’s childcare review is overdue. Here’s three ways to fix a broken system’
Our Co Chair @ImogenOtr wrote for @LabourList before last week’s historic by-election results to set out what we still need to see from @UKLabour on early years.

Chronically Online Kemi wants you to believe our breakfast clubs are underfunded. She's wrong.
Numbers below on why that's not the case, but a key one is £450 – that's how much we'll save some parents.
The Tories can't bring themselves to welcome Labour's free breakfast clubs.
We have some of the worst paternity leave in Europe.
To allow Dads to spend more time with their newborns, and to give mums more support and options, we need an expansion.
I will be supporting the Government’s work on this, and their parental leave review however I can.
Two years ago I joined 2,000 families campaigning for change.
So pleased with the pro-activity and pace of change coming from @bphillipsonMP
Investment in our state run nurseries provides a lifeline to our maintained nurseries in Bristol. This policy is such welcome news!
Important point. And issue for fathers too. Overwhelming maj of fathers don’t take full pat leave as can’t afford it, entrenching “division of labour” in the home
This new research finds that England is one of the worst countries in Europe for access to childcare. Single parents are almost twice as likely to be unemployed and underemployed compared with couple parents. Lack of childcare and flexible working are two main reasons as to why.
NEW: Today marks the release of a world-first study by @Mitch_Inst mapping childcare access for 10 million children across nine countries. The study finds England to be one of the worst countries with 30% of people living in a 'childcare desert' 1/2

NEW: Labour is set to launch a new "taskforce" to work on a child poverty strategy, amid pressure on the government to ditch the controversial two-child benefit cap in its King's Speech.

Absolutely this - @IPPR’s childcare guarantee work has been hugely influential on the Labour Campaign for Childcare Reform. We wish @rachelstatham_ the best in her new role leading on children and young people at the No 10 Policy Unit!
IPPRs 'childcare guarantee' work has been really impressive with a focus on sustainable funding, a new deal for the workforce & quality for children. Hopefully bodes well for early years that two of its best are going into No.10. Congrats to @rachelstatham_ & @carysroberts
Labour will deliver the early education and care that parents need and which sets children up for life.
That starts with 3,000 new school-based nurseries.
And a strategy in year one to secure the workforce needed across the sector to drive high and rising standards.
Affordable childcare provision from the end of parental leave to the end of primary school is one of the central asks of our #twobigsteps campaign. Delighted to hear that it is expected to be a @UKLabour manifesto commitment.
EXCL: Labour pledges to create more than 100,000 new nursery places for children from nine months old, helping to drive up standards and meet demand, in key manifesto offer for working parents.

Great to speak to @TheHouseMag about the need for all workers on the Parliamentary Estate to be able to access suitable childcare support. It’s so important we don’t push parents out of politics because of a lack of childcare.
Labour’s review into childcare and early years education is hugely welcome. The status quo is unsustainable for both families and workers in the sector, and anything less than system-wide review and reform will not be enough to deliver the change we need to see.
As families up and down the country know, the Tories have broken our childcare system.
Only Labour can bring the change our country needs, and the childcare support parents and children deserve.
Good quality childcare needs to be a core part of any modern economy.
80% increase in costs + decrease in availability is not good for families or the economy.
Really pleased @bphillipsonMP has commissioned this review so we can have a proper review and a long term, comprehensive plan on #childcare
Nothing we have heard from the Chancellor yet changes the facts - where is the extra funding needed to deliver expanded free childcare hours?
#Budg2024
However, we estimate that the gap between what the Government funds settings and what it costs to provide each place currently adds up to around £2bn a year for 3- and 4-olds and £5bn in total when the planned expansion is due to be fully rolled out in September 2025.
Maybe the Chancellor has noticed that the first rollout of free hours for 2yos at the start of next month is in chaos? What he announced today won’t fix the issue - he’s breaking his promise to parents about help with childcare costs #Budget
Childcare - this is a bit techy. Promising that the funding paid to providers will rise with faster than expected wages. Just not explaining where DfE will get the money from because there’s (inexcusably) no spending review
Government-funded early education and childcare should support families to thrive. The current hours model entrenches educational, economic and social inequality before children even start school.
Important new briefing from coalition members @suttontrust out today 👇
