A new National Care Service. Greater public control of water, energy, and housing. A National Commission on Electoral Reform. Strengthening our relationship with Europe. Reforming the education and welfare system.
Today I set out a different path for Britain.
You may disagree with some or all of what I have said today. But I have given you what you often say is missing from politics.
Honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love.
If you agree with enough of what I have said, get behind this plan. And get behind each other.
It's time to draw a line.
To move beyond a decade of drift and division.
To bring a spirit of unity and positivity back to our country.
To unlock the working-class aspiration that is still there in every postcode.
To hope again.
Day 2 starts with a speech from @wesstreeting and a strong commitment to supporting Ukraine 'Yesterday, today, tomorrow: we are with you for as long as it takes'
@labour4europe@stellacreasy The brutal reality of the last ten years have made things clear. We need allies more than ever for our economy, security and future.
@jonasgahrstore@andyburnham Britain and Norway need each other and should reach out to each other. There’s a history to this from the Second World War, and for five years Norway was governed from London. That's why we have an agreement for shared security today. We are bound by the North Sea.
@jonasgahrstore@andyburnham There is war in Europe, trade and security less predictable, AI changing work at record speed, and climate change reshaping the world and this is felt around the dinner table, in energy and food security.
@jonasgahrstore The right often forgets what the welfare state is for—opportunity and security for all—and we must lead in improving and modernising it.
@jonasgahrstore Norway gave a guarantee of a fixed electricity price, and every year Labour has been in government they have cut kindergarten prices.
This is equality in everyday life—this is what our movement is here for.
@jonasgahrstore In Norway they were tested on this: for a long time in the early 2020s the government was thrown crisis after crisis to deal with, and this opened up a distance between them and citizens.
@jonasgahrstore He speaks about the importance of giving people breathing space in the UK and across Europe.
Although the everyday questions can get lost, these are the very questions people use to judge if the government is working for them and if it understands their issues.
It was great to meet @NYCMayor this week.
Progressive parties are so much stronger when we learn from and stand with each other - from the cost of living to climate action to peace in Israel and Palestine.
