For everyone else who was lied to in public school:

When I was in school, I was taught that the Constitution’s Three-Fifths Compromise was meant to dehumanize black people… as if they only counted as 3/5 of a person. It wasn’t until recently when studying American history for myself that I learned the provision was actually about counting only 3/5 of the slave population when determining how many representatives slave states would receive in the House of Representatives.

Without the compromise, slave states wanted to count enslaved people fully for representation while denying them the right to vote. Counting them as 3/5 limited the political power those states would gain in the House and the Electoral College.

The Three-Fifths Compromise was about representation and political power, NOT a statement that any human being was worth only 3/5 of a person. The constitution is not a pro-slavery document… it’s an anti-slavery one.

Tips from a science journalist who loves produce:

1. Blanching reduces risk (this is a cooking technique where you boil a vegetable in salted water + then immediately transfer to an ice bath to retain color + crunch.)

2. Eating fruit with thick peels reduces risk (grapefruits, bananas, oranges.)

3. Cooking vegetables then using in a salad: beets, carrots, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts

4. Vinegar / salting / freezing doesn’t get rid of these pathogens btw!

Let's bust a myth: if you find a baby bird on the ground and can see the nest above it, put it back. The parents won't abandon it because you touched it.

Nesting birds have invested too much time and energy into their young to abandon them over a weird smell. They identify their chicks by sight and sound, not smell. A parent bird that watches you place a nestling back in the nest will likely return to feed it, but excessive activity around the nest may cause them to abandon it though, so try not to linger.

The myth was well-intentioned, meant to discourage people from handling wildlife unnecessarily, but the consequences of believing it are real.

The distinction worth knowing: a nestling has few or no feathers, can't stand, and doesn't belong on the ground. Put it back if you can reach the nest.

A fledgling has feathers, hops, and is supposed to be on the ground while it learns to fly. Its parents are nearby and watching. Leave the fledgling alone.
