Under the banner of “queer theory” and the expansion of gay rights, certain paraphilias, most notably autogynephilia, were reframed as protected identities rather than patterns of sexual arousal that require scrutiny. What began as a demand for tolerance of adult private behavior hardened into legal shields, institutional capture, and the insistence that any questioning equals bigotry. Once that precedent was set, the logic did not stop at one fetish. It created a pathway for other paraphilias to claim the same protections, the same language of “rights,” and the same moral immunity.

PFLAG was founded as an organization of parents supporting their lesbian and gay children. It was never meant to be a vehicle for men with a sexual interest in wearing women’s clothes and demanding access to female spaces, language, and legal categories. Yet here we are: an elderly transvestite installed as a public face of an organization that once stood for same-sex attracted people. The symbolism is not subtle. It is the visual record of a hostile takeover. The gay community’s hard-won political capital was redirected to serve a different set of interests, many of them rooted in cross-sex fetishism and the erasure of sex-based reality.

When autogynephilia is treated as an identity rather than a paraphilia, the distinction between orientation and fetish collapses. Same-sex attraction is not a fetish. It is a stable, non-volitional pattern of desire directed at the same sex. Autogynephilia is erotic target location error directed at the self as the opposite sex. Conflating the two was never an accident of language; it was a strategic move. Once the law and institutions accepted the reframing, the door opened for every subsequent claim that a sexual interest, no matter how niche or boundary-crossing, deserves the same legal and cultural protection once reserved for gay people fighting actual discrimination.

The result is visible: women’s spaces compromised, children’s medical pathways medicalized on the basis of adult sexual narratives, and gay and lesbian youth increasingly told that their same-sex attraction is evidence they are “really” the opposite sex. The organizations that should have defended the integrity of homosexuality instead became instruments of its dilution. An old LGB advocacy group now fronted by a lifelong transvestite is not progress. It is the public demonstration of how thoroughly the original mission was subordinated.

This is not a call for cruelty toward adults who live with these patterns. It is a demand for honesty about what they are, and a refusal to let the language of gay rights continue to be used as cover for the expansion of paraphilic claims into law, medicine, and childhood. The image of that front man for PFLAG is not an outlier. It is the endpoint of a process that began the moment fetish was allowed to wear the costume of civil rights.
