LAGOS DSVA CHILD SAFEGUARDING INITIATIVE FOR PARENTS: KNOW THE SIGNS

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has developed an online course to empower parents and guardians with knowledge about child abuse and related issues. This initiative serves as a preventive tool to help parents protect their children from various forms of abuse, including physical and sexual abuse, bullying, and more.

The course, led by seasoned experts in child safeguarding and protection, covers crucial topics such as Understanding Child Rights, Bullying and Peer Violence, Challenging Behavior, Positive Discipline, and Handling Disclosures of Abuse. Participants will also gain insights into the socio-cultural factors influencing child protection in Nigeria.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to take this free course at https://t.co/Zfgfuzi7zV.

So far, over 14,000 teachers, guidance counselors, and first responders have successfully completed the courses on safeguarding and child protection. These programs have enhanced their understanding of child safeguarding, reporting pathways, and how to effectively handle disclosures of abuse.

We hope this Online Certified Course will enlighten and equip parents to recognize and prevent abuse, ensuring a safer future for every child.

LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO VIRAL REPORT OF ALLEGED THREATS AND INTIMIDATION OF A WIDOW IN IKORODU

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) was alerted on Tuesday, 28th July 2026, to a viral report alleging threats, intimidation, and attempted dispossession of a widow by members of her late husband's family in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The Agency successfully established contact with the survivor, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault, and intimidation following the recent death of her husband. She further informed the Agency that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division.

As part of its intervention, the Agency commenced engagement with the investigating police officers handling the case. Preliminary feedback from the Police confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue.

The Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of the survivor and her children, while working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law.

LAGOS STATE VALIDATES PRIMARY PREVENTION POLICY ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE TO STRENGTHEN GBV PREVENTION FRAMEWORK

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), with support from Ford Foundation @FordFoundation, convened the Stakeholder Validation Meeting on the Lagos State Primary Prevention Policy on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on Thursday, 23rd July 2026, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Ikeja.

The meeting marked a major milestone in the development of Lagos State's first comprehensive Primary Prevention Policy on GBV, following a two-day technical review workshop involving representatives from government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), development partners, civil society organisations, academia, professional bodies, religious institutions, security agencies, and youth groups.

Delivering the welcome address on behalf of the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the Head of Legal Department, Mrs. Yetunde Odekunle, noted that preventing Gender-Based Violence requires more than legislation and enforcement. She stated that the policy, developed through extensive stakeholder consultations, places prevention at the centre of the State's response by promoting healthy relationships, positive social norms, and shared community responsibility.

Professor Olufunlayo Bammeke of the University of Lagos presented the revised draft policy, highlighting key amendments following the technical review workshop. Stakeholders also recommended institutionalising GBV prevention within the Education Law and strengthening the capacity of teachers and school counsellors.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Mrs. Motolani Ladipo reaffirmed the First Lady's commitment to ending GBV and described prevention as the most effective strategy for addressing violence.

The meeting concluded with key recommendations, including implementation timelines, periodic policy reviews, expanded provisions on Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (TFSGBV), improved accessibility for persons with disabilities, stronger collaboration with community-based organisations, survivor empowerment initiatives, and alignment with existing legal and institutional frameworks. These recommendations will be incorporated into the final policy ahead of its adoption and implementation.

LAGOS DSVA & RoLAC II STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP WITH CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS TO COMBAT TECHNOLOGY-FACILITATED GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme II @RoLACNG, funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), convened a Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Coordination Meeting and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Case Conferencing to strengthen collaboration in addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), with particular focus on the growing threat of Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (TFSGBV).

Held on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2026 at the Lagos Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, the meeting brought together 50 civil society organizations and GBV practitioners to strengthen survivor-centred coordination, improve referral pathways, and build institutional capacity to respond to emerging forms of digital abuse.

Delivering the welcome address on behalf of the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Ms Zainab Alaka reaffirmed the Agency's commitment to strengthening partnerships that promote access to justice, psychosocial support, and protection for survivors. She encouraged participants to sustain collaboration, professionalism, and survivor-centred responses to both conventional and technology-facilitated violence.

A technical session facilitated by Ms Jessica Eni, Legal and Policy Programmes Lead at Tech Societal and Team Lead at MyLawbrella, examined the rise in AI-enabled abuse, image-based sexual abuse, cyber harassment, online grooming, and sextortion. The session highlighted the need for stronger legal frameworks, improved digital literacy, effective evidence preservation, and greater accountability from technology companies.

Mrs. Tumininu Oni, Head of Case Management at Lagos DSVA, led the second session on strengthening survivor-centred coordination through effective case management, referral mechanisms, and respect for institutional mandates.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to deepen collaboration, strengthen digital justice processes, enhance protection systems for women anda children, and sustain coordinated efforts to address Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence across Lagos State.

Lagos DSVA proudly inducted 300 students from secondary schools across Education District III into the Kings' Club and Queens' Club after a six week training programme on the prevention of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).

The event featured inspiring drama, spoken word, poetry, and the Pledge of Allegiance, as the students committed to promoting respect, speaking up against abuse, and becoming positive role models in their schools and communities.

Together, they are taking the lead in building safer, more respectful, and violence free schools across Lagos State.

LAGOS DSVA AND RoLAC II STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO DISABILITY RIGHTS AND TECHNOLOGY-FACILITATED GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme II @RoLACNG, funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA, on Tuesday, 21st July 2026, convened a stakeholder engagement on the Special People's Law and Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (TF-SGBV) at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.

The engagement brought together officials from Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LGAs/LCDAs), the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos Chapter, and other stakeholders to strengthen grassroots responses to disability inclusion and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of Lagos DSVA, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, represented by Ms Zainab Alaka, emphasised the importance of community partnerships in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and addressing the growing threat of Technology-Facilitated SGBV.

Participants received training on disability inclusion, the provisions of the Special People's Law, and emerging forms of online abuse affecting vulnerable groups. They also presented community action plans focused on improving awareness, strengthening reporting mechanisms, promoting inclusive policies, and expanding access to support services.

The event concluded with a renewed resolve among stakeholders to champion disability inclusion, strengthen community referral pathways, and drive sustained action against Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender Based Violence at the grassroots.
