Last night Eritrean state television carried an official government statement that comes closer than ever to admitting Eritrea has joined the war in Ethiopia. No parliament debated it, no constitution limits it, and no Eritrean voted for it. Isaias Afwerki and the PFDJ alone decide when our sons and daughters are sent to die, just as they did in Tigray. We in EBRF reject another war waged in our name. We have a plan for a democratic transition, and we are organizing Eritreans at home and abroad to end this regime before it burns the region again.

However, after what happened to Tadesse Worede, I have come to see Getachew’s decision differently. I now believe leaving Mekelle was the right decision for his life.

When Getachew Reda left Mekelle for Addis Ababa after the TPLF removed the former interim government, many Tegaru called him a traitor and an enemy of Tigray. At the time, his decision was largely viewed through the lens of political struggle and survival.
