HE DIDN'T TALK ABOUT MOVIES. NOT ONCE.

That's the thing about Clint Eastwood that nobody tells you. The screen legend, the four-time Oscar winner, the guy whose squint became cultural shorthand for toughness. Sit him down on his own land, and none of that comes up.

What comes up is a gosling on the 11th hole. A turkey flock near the fairway. A 134-acre artichoke farm he bought and gave away.

Land has a way of cutting through the resume.

I spent a day with Eastwood at Tehama, his 2,000-acre property high above Carmel Valley and the Monterey Peninsula. He founded it, lives there full-time, and built it alongside architect Alan Williams under one operating principle: Don't screw it up.

Legendary golf course architect Jay Morrish coined that phrase. First words out of his mouth when he saw Tehama?

"The big thing is not to screw this place up."

Eastwood knew he had his man.

The property had been permitted for hundreds of homes. Full-scale development. Plenty of land investors would have signed on the dotted line.

Not Eastwood. More than 85 percent of Tehama's 2,040 acres were set aside as natural open space. Roads that had served the land for generations were left intact. Wildlife corridors untouched. Williams described their process simply: They eased their way into it, spending years on foot and in an old red GMC Jimmy, learning the ridges before moving any of them.

It wasn't the first time he chose preservation over profit. In 1995, Eastwood acquired the 134-acre Odello Farm at the mouth of the Carmel River, an artichoke operation sitting on development rights, water rights, and permits for more than 80 homes.

He gave it all away. The farm, the rights, the permits. He chose to deed them to the Big Sur Land Trust and to Monterey County. In fact, Odello became the missing piece of a countywide trail system that runs from Carmel Valley to Big Sur.

No press release or ceremony. He just did it.

The day I visited Tehama, the US Open was underway a few miles down the road at Pebble Beach, which Eastwood co-owns. Hundreds of thousands packed Pebble all week. Not Eastwood. He watched from the Saloon at Tehama, on a big screen, with his friends.

"Why would I want to be at Pebble Beach, fighting with 250,000 people to watch this guy putt when I can be here?"

“This guy” happened to be Gary Woodland, and all eyes at the Saloon were on the Kansas Jayhawk. “Look at him. Look at the way he walks the course. He’s playing golf out there. Meanwhile, everyone else is playing the Open,” Eastwood tells me. "If he stays loose, he'll win."

The following day, Woodland stayed loose, all right. Shot 2-under. Won by three.

Clint called it.

THE POWER OF NO.

Jim Ratcliffe wanted a Defender, an old boxy one. Built since 1948. Discontinued in 2016.

When the British entrepreneur asked Land Rover if he could restart production himself, they said no.

So he built his own. And he built it better.

Ratcliffe named it after the pub in London where the idea took shape. Bought a BMW plant in France. Sourced a straight-six engine and an 8-speed automatic. Designed a purpose-built, go-anywhere work truck for people who actually need one. No lifestyle branding, no watered-down off-road package, and definitely no apologies.

Just a serious vehicle for people dealing with serious terrain.

INEOS handed me the keys to one for a thousand-mile run across Texas and New Mexico. On the highway, it drew wide-stares. The Grenadier has that effect: bold, brash, built like it means it.

But pavement wasn't the point.

The point was Vermejo: Ted Turner's half-million-acre ranch straddling the New Mexico-Colorado border. Rob Turner, one of Ted's grandson, was my guide. We spent an afternoon tracking bison across open pasture, emerging from the safari roof as the herd made their way to us, around us, and beyond us. Bison at close range are indifferent to pretty much everything. Think of it as mind over matter. They didn’t mind, and we didn’t matter.

The Grenadier was indifferent to everything else. Creek beds, washboard roads, steep inclines, nosedive descents, the full elevation swing from high-desert savannah to sub-alpine terrain. It handled all of the above without ceremony or complaint.

That's the tell.

The vehicles that matter most to landowners aren't the ones that look good at the valet stand. They're the ones you can put 50,000 miles on without second guessing.

For large landowners, the math is elementary: You need on-road manners to get you to the gate and off-road chops to get you to where the buffalo roam.

The Grenadier covers both.
