So cheap they couldn't keep up with XJ demand at launch.
If they'd priced it right they might have had money for new product and (as Ford were dismayed to find) to modernise the factory.

@fr1tzthecat @adrianfclarke @flaneurUK Cheap Leases kill residuals. If a new £100k car is £1000pm on OEM subsidised lease deals the 2yr old £75k car ends up the same or more on unsub'd finance. So the price has to become £50/60k to get the £/m sufficiently less to be attractive. Punchline below 👇

@adrianfclarke @GhostOfFrederic I sold these new. Audi's competitor info focussed on very rational benefits vs MB A-Class but few enquirers also considered the MB.
Most sales came from those also considering Golf / A3 & were usually bought with emotion rather than logic.
Fun specs would have made a difference.

@sniffpetrol Filling out the yellow V5 trade slip (or online equiv) is what puts the car into that 'no keeper limbo', but tickets etc then get sent to the named trader courtesy DVLA.
Got a call once from Merseyside Police after a £500 Mondeo V6 we'd sent to BCA was used in an armed robbery!
